Monitor 40 as front speakers?

Hi, my wife picked out a real nice entertainment center for the living room, but she wants the front speakers put in the grilled shelves on each side. Will Monitor 40s laying on their sides be okay? I have a CS2 and thought that these would be my best bet.
Thanks, Tim (noob, 2nd class)

I think they should work great. They should sound almost exactly as the Cs2. The only difference is are the 5.25" woofers in the monitor 40s as compared to the 6.5" woofers in the CS2, but i doubt that the difference will be audible. The center channel could always benefit from being larger that the left and right anyway, since it is the most important speaker.
I say go for it!KEF Q150 | Rythmik F12 | Yamaha Aventage RX-A780 -
I don't think you will be dissappointed, I use them for my rears. You didn't mention a sub though? Gonna need one, not much low end on the 40's... Great sounding speakers though, you will pleased if you building a system with them....Rockin' In My House

I have some R30s that I got from Fry's for the fronts just to get my system up and running. They sound really good to me for the price, just nowhere to put them now. I need a sub and have been holding off while doing some research on the subject. This will be my first and I wanted to get one good enough that I wouldn't need to upgrade right off the bat. Thanks to everyone for confirmation of my next move in getting together a beginner HT.

Welcome, Tim. Whereabouts in Tejas?
Main issues with your mandated set-up would be vibration from the shelves and dulling the sound.
A thin foam pad would help alleviate the former, if it shows up. On the latter, hopefully the shelves' grill covering is pretty transparent, but even if it is I suggest you remove the 40's grills.
Enjoy...More later,

Yeah, Tour, I'm from the scenic Houston area. The grills are very transparent you can see through them fairly well. I might be reluctant to remove the speaker grills to keep little visitors from poking out the tweeters, ha. My old Bic Venturis held up for many years until some kid came over and punched in the tweeters. And that was with the foam grills on. I'm getting anxious to find a sub so I can watch Independence Day the way it was meant to be.

I've been threatening a Houston field trip and/ or gathering for a while now. I'll put you on the list.More later,

You shouldn't have a problem using 40s as fronts with the CS2. They are timbre matched and IMO, for HT use, the right relative size to give the important center channel some extra oompf. Just make sure you have a quality sub as you won't get enough for HT use out of the 40s.

I just ordered the Mirage S12 from Vann's. I have heard good things about it and the price seemed right. I've got a place in the corner all picked out for it. I hope its a good choice, the guys over in the AVS forum were bragging on them a little....

I think the Monitor 40s will work good for you. The sub, well your gonna love it! It does sound better after about a week of breakin in. Enjoy.....NOT MUCH, BUT IT'S ALL MINE!

OK DA, how do I break in my sub? I've been playing a lot of music through my speakers, and can already tell a difference. Same thing with the sub? This is my first one.
PS How is that SXRD? I haven't gotten to see one properly set up yet. Sounds great though. -
To break in the sub just let it play. Don't play it real loud for a while. Just play different things. When I first got mine I just turned on the radio at moderate level and let it run for a few hours. The SXRD, well you got to see one out of the store. Mine is great, no green blob that others have mentioned. I haven't even adjusted any settings yet. It replaced a 5 year old HDTV and looks noticeably better. Regular cable channels don't look as good but I watch mostly HD and DVDs.NOT MUCH, BUT IT'S ALL MINE!

I don't know what the "green blob" thing is all about, but my son was all for one of the DLPs when they first came out, but he complained about the rainbows once he watched one. We played it safe with a rear projection Mitsubishi. Maybe this new generation of 1080p tvs will be good enough for me to want to replace it.
Still waiting for the Mirage!!! -
OK, I got my Mirage S12 in yesterday, and got it hooked up with my new Monitor 40s. The speakers sound great already, but the sub seems very anemic at this time. I've been playing some music for a few hours and maybe it is getting loosened up a little. My main problem is the Yamaha 5980 receiver wanting to set the mains up as large speakers. I manually set them to small and still it doesn't seem to be sending much LFE the the sub. I guess I'm impatient about getting the sound right before the sub is broken in. Even the instructions talk about 50 hours of breakin before optimising the sound setup. That's a lot of movies and cds!
