Sony SA-WM500 - mod?

Greetings all,

I had the old SA-WM40, which I found info about doing the polyfill mod to, a few years back. Recently I found a killer deal on a NIB SA-WM500 which I could not pass up. I really don't have a use for the sub, might use it in a 2nd system in a year or two. In the mean time I was doing some digging and didn't see any info on mod'n it out. I was wondering if anyone has heard of mod's to this box or tried it themselves. I was thinking about doing the polyfill trick but didn't know if it would be worth it. I don't expect this to be a wonder-box but I was impressed with the SA-WM40 for the price and I hope the new one will be as impressive.

So anyone heard/read/done any mods to this box?

I modded my 500. it was one of the first subs I had. I did the polyfill mod (fill with polyfill, dont block the port) which was easy. I also did the ModPodge mod (cover the cone of the driver, but not the surround or dustcap, in ModPodge to increase mass). I only coated the outside of the driver and the increase in performance was significant. unmodded, the 500 is way too boomy. but the mods tightenned it up quite a bit. I gave it to a friend of mine to use in a budget theater in his living room with BIC speakers and a yammie 5740 reciever. the package dont sound too bad at all.

do the mods, including the modpodge mod, and you will be quite surprised at the difference.

    Do you mean THIS STUFF

I am quessing you would just give the speaker a light coating with a rag or brush then let dry? I have never heard of this.

3-4 light coats with a brush (i used a cheap foam brush, works fine. remember, only the cone. not the surround or dust cap (really wont harm it, but looks terrible)

Thanks, looks like I have a nice little project now. I'll head to the local fabric store and get the supplies. I don't really have a use for the sub at this time but oh how I do like to play. Now only if I could put a 30foot run for a sub cable to place this at the back of the room. I might have some fun with it, although I am worried I would destroy the wonderful way the SVS blends with my setup now.

have fun with the project. thats how we learn.
I use 2 subs in my system, a hsu stf2 does rear sub duty in mine. as long as you keep the rear sub low, just to fill in, but not too loud, as to make its presence known, it would be fine. experiment, worse thing that will happen is you disconnect it and smack yourself for wasting money on a 30 ft sub cord :D
