All alone I was planning on getting a Yamaha 5890 receiver to match my soon to be ordered Polk speakers. I keep reading about the sound being "Bright".

I have come up with 2 alternates.
1) H & K AVR-435 ($75 more)
2) Onkyo 703 ($119 more)

Any suggestions is appreciated.

Onkyo TX-NR709 A/V Receiver
Polk RTi8's Front
In-Walls for Rears
CSi5 Center
SVS 20-39PCI Subwoofer

if you don't like bright sound, then H/K all the way. IMO Onkyo is just as bad as Yamaha when it comes to this.

Listen music with both receivers and choose. I like the sound little bright than normal..for that reason I buy a Yamaha receiver that sounds great (for movies and music).

If you don´t like bright sound...I recommend a Denon A/V receiver instead of HK.

    Bye

    Yamaha or H/K.
The latter is my choice although I am setting up a Marantz.

Do all of these receivers have sufficient power for the speakers?

I'm brand new to HT, but I went with the Yamaha, mainly for the price. I got it at Etronics.com. I've heard they might not be an authorized dealer and I'm not sure about what that means warranty wise. But I like the sound of the Yamaha just fine and the features are easy to figure out after you read the manual a few times. Playing music on the same speakers compared with my old Pioneer stereo receiver, I could understand that it indeed may sound a little brighter. But to my tired old ears, I think the dialogue in movies comes through well. Very unscientific, but if you go to the BB or CC store, its hard to tell much from their setups anyway.

Both will get the job done, and both have preouts so that if you decide you need more power you can get separate amps.

You will only know which one you like when you go & listen to both with your own music that you know very well.

Yes..agreed with other posts. You may decide by yourself and yoour ears :)

At this level...Yamaha and Denon are the best brands in the whole world (with Marantz and HK) in a/v receivers. The sound is crystal clear in all of them. Choose for your feelings ;)

:) what speakers do you have on order?
different brands pair better (or worse) with certain models
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
