Fellow forum members,
I like to listen to my record collection in a fairly organized way, I've divided up the LPs into various catagories; jazz, rock, classical, blues, electronic music, etc. Then in order to listen to everything, instead of just favorites, I play each record in alphabetical rotation. I know that sounds a bit retentave, but it lets me listen to records I wouldn't normally pick out. I may be in the "C's" in the classical section, "G's" in jazz and "S's" for rock. So, I've just listened to the Strawb's record "Grave New World". Anybody familiar with this 70's era British folk/rock group? If so, I'd like to expand my collection, any recommendations on what else to get?
Thanks, Ken

STRAWBS/DEEP CUTS-BURNING FOR YOU (RGF/WCDCD 027)
This 2-disc release contains two Strawbs albums that were previously unavailable on CD, 1976s Deep Cuts and 1977s Burning For You. Burning For You was recorded by the same lineup as Deep Cuts and contains two tracks, Cut Like A Diamond and Heartbreaker, which could have been among rocks classics. Cut Like A Diamond, in particular, represents the Strawbs at their rocking best. Its a powerful band-driven song that emphasizes Dave Cousins excellent, but jagged, vocal style. It also happens to be a vocal style that he is still fully capable of performing live, as was evidenced on his last US tour in 1994.
Deep Cuts is a bit mellower than Burning For You but contains some great songwriting efforts by the band, whose lineup consisted of Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert, Chas Cronk, and Rod Coombes. My Friend Peter, Simple Visions, Charmer, Beside The Rio Grand, and The Soldiers Tale are all classic Strawbs tunes that should be in any Strawbs fans collection. -
Thanks very much, I appreciate the info, I'll try and find the vinyl versions first.

Also, I understand Sandy Denny sang with them, for a while. Have you heard of any recordings with her?

After Sandy Denny left the Strawbs, she joined Fairport Convention, staying with them until 1969, after the recording of "Liege and Lief", when she decided to leave Fairport and form her own band Fotheringay, which included her husband to be Trevor Lucas, guitarist Jerry Donahue and stalwarts Gerry Conway and Pat Donaldson. Fotheringay's first and only released album is pictured above.
Sandy recorded the Dave Cousins song "Two Weeks Last Summer" for their second album, but before that album was completed, the band split and the track was not released. She had asked Cousins to write an additional verse for the song, which he obligingly did. This version appears on the 4LP or 3CD retrospective "Who Knows Where The Time Goes". The set also includes "Sail Away To The Sea" from the Sandy and the Strawbs album.

Thank you, I've found a copy of "Burning For You" on ebay and have a bid in. I have the four record boxed set of Sandy's, what an amazing voice! Her "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" is a true classic. Its a song that really manages to state a feeling that everyone has felt. The records are an excellent test of the mid range capability of your system. When its played on good gear, you'll get shivers.

Check out "I Can See Your House From Here."

Thanks Jeff, I will. I won the ebay on the "Burning for You" record, so I should get it next week. There's a "Deep Cuts" on ebay, I'm eyeing.
Thanks again, Ken
