Extra Wire

What's the best way to handle extra runs of wire? I just changed my setup from an A/V tower to a more compact TV stand, and so a lot of my 6 ft interconnects are almost laughably long. Eventually I would like to buy some shorter runs, but in the interim, what do you guys do with extra? I've heard it's not good to coil it up (most likely due to some induction or something); is this true? I'd just let it fall where it may, but I really hate having a rats nest of wires.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Try to neaten them up, but DO not coil them. Yes, inductance issues
