I went up to whislter with a friend last weekend to do some snowboarding. I've only been riding for one season (this one) but I've been up to a more local mountain about 30 - 40 times so far. We figured it'd be fun to try somewhere else for a change so we hopped in his hunker chevette (the same one he raced a ferrari with the week earlier :p ) and went to go stay with some family friends in their nice place on Green Lake, which is about 15 minutes from the main village.

We had a little delimma getting our passes, due to the waiver form needed to be signed by a legal guardian, but acquiring a new "mom" for the weekend we managed to dodge it. The lift tickets were a ghastly $59 each but nevertheless we were determined to ride something new.

We rode for about 5 hours straight and had an absolute blast. Neither of us had ever ridden snow that beautiful before. The actual runs were pretty decent and amazing in parts but when we moved into the trees on the sides of the runs we got to ride something truely great. It was about 3 feet of untouched powder.

Throughout the day I only managed to hit a couple trees, take only a couple hard bails and was unfortunatly hit by one inconsiderate rider. Within a couple hours I could feel the sharp jabing pains in both my knees from past injuries from earlier in the season, but I didn't care with snow that amazing.

Long story short, if you enjoy skiing or snowboarding and you happen to be in the area give Whistler a shot. It's expensive but well worth trying at least once. btw we rode blackcomb not whistler*

Anyone else try a good mountain this winter?

Very shortly we'll be heading to Mammoth for a week. Not sure exactly when but sometime in March. No snowboarding though, we ski. I cannot justify paying to learn how to snowboard when I can already ski.

heading down to Taos, NM next week. heading from one snowless place to another. this has been one of the worst years i can remember out east  hopefully this storm this weekend will pick things up.

i have heard lots of good things about whistler, but have yet to make it there, glad you had a good time. one of these years i will get there...there are too many nice places to go in the western half of the continent and not enough vacation days to get there :(

    Hey Michael,
Is that $59 cdn? Are you getting the youth rate or something? I thought the adult rate was $70 cdn + gst. We get adult ski tix for $61 incl gst (corporate rate). Check with me in Nov. We usually get a chance to buy flex passes at the corporate rate.

    regards

Sounds fun people. I think next year I'll try kicking horse. With my grouse mountain season pass I get 5 free days of riding there and a whole bunch of other discounts at other resorts.

That's 59 cdn. Since I'm 17 I get to enjoy the sweet benefits of youth passes. We bought edge cards for $59 which gives you the first day free, a $10 gift certificate for food or random stores and a discounted rate when you go again ($51 for the next day). You also happen to get 10% off a couple stores like westbeach and canski.

Well, I have to go... need to catch my bus up to Grouse for some friday night riding ;)

Might be going to up Whistler myself later this Summer. Anyone have any must do must see things to suggest? I want to go golfing, but not sure if I can ditch my wife long enough to get a round in.

<img src="http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7104/day21sf5.jpg" align="right" border=0>Not really sure of anything that is a 'must do' up there unless you ski or snowboard (and go up once the season opens). Everything is pretty expensive at Whistler, but it's a nice place with some great lakes and trails if you're into that kind of stuff.

Green Lake, the one I stayed at last year, is pretty nice (close to the village too). It's fairly cold because it's all glacier run off but it's good for things like wakeboarding / waterskiing and fishing. It also gets this cool silty glow to it at certain times of the year.

Some hotels have a golf/spa package. If you were to book that with them, it'd be a shame if you and the wife didn't use it...

There's a train that will take you up to Whistler, the scenery is quite nice and you don't have to deal with the highway construction. It's not bad but you should plan for it.

There's quite a few places to hike around and outside of Whistler. Lots of outdoor activities. Some nice restaurants can be found and the village is an interesting stroll. There's even a library and a movie theatre if you absolutely can't find anything to do.

There was a breakfast crepe place in the new part of the village that was pretty good. Can't remember the name anymore, it's been a long time since I've been up there. :(
