Not a great deal. This is the lowest ES model in that year. (EDIT: I was wrong, there was an X111ES that was definetly a rebadged CDP-791). Some would argue its not a real ES like the X333, X555, and X777, but a rebadged mainstream model. Note that it only weighs <14lbs. The other ES models at that time were 25lbs+

Hmmm... I have an ES in the closet from those early years. I should see if I can get anything out of it. I don't think I've looked at it twice since the early 90's.

No, they just switched to the X in front around 1988. There was still a large variance in the model quality.

Here is one of the most useful links when looking at the older Sony ES CD players
That page has the Japanese model number, which sometimes varied slightly with the US model and often the US model was delayed a year.
There is also a lot of useful info at the Vintage Knob website

the x5000 and x3000 es players from 96 look stunning. much like the scd-1.
    i couldn't find my 1990 model however.

that e-bay says something about the '87-'94 models being the best. Don't know if that's true or not..

What is your 1990 model? It is probably equivalent to one of the Japanese 88 or 89 models, unless its a rebadged model. For example, the CDP-X209ES is rebadged CDP-790.

That site only deals with single disk players. The changers, although nice, were never in the same league as the high end single disk players.

Mine is a CDP-307ESD. It was manufactured December of 87. It has the fixed and variable analog outputs and a digital output. It also has the motorized volume control which I always thought was pretty cool.

CDP-307ESD was very much the same as the CDP-950.

The front panel looks similar but the CDP-950 didn't have a digital output.

Yes, both of my ES players have the remote controlled volume control to adjust level of the analog outputs....my X202ES (x333esj) is directly connected to a Rotel 1080..no preamp.....sounds sweeeeet.... :D I wonder why more manufacturers don't provide this cool feature...I would pay more for it...
