Note to Polk about Frys sub setup...and others

I went into a Frys location in NorCal to listen to some RTi6s and 4s. After listening in 2 channel for awhile, I asked and listened to several Polk subs and a couple of JBLs that were in the room. They was the most awful sounding subs, I've ever heard. Either way too loud or just one note boom. I doubt if any of them were calibrated at all. I just don't see how they can sell these products.

Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
PB13Ultra RO
BW Silvers
Oppo BDP-83SE

I agree the polk subs (ecept the psw1000) sound like crap at frys. I can close my eyes and point to the polk every time (ecept the psw1000) . the presentation room at frys always impresses me (where the psw100 is), but everything else dosent.

There is a reason why SVS, HSU, Adire, and Onix are the subs recomended on this forum on a regular basis.

so much more bang for the buck. Ecept maby the psw1000. I was amazed when I heard it. its performance above 30 hz is amazing, but anything else i think beats it below 30.

I'm not claiming that Polk subs sound awful (which it kind of sounds like after re-reading my post). The setup was so bad it made the speakers sound poor. A factory rep should take the time to show them how to calibrate these subs.

It won't help. Too high turnover at big box electronic stores.

Im not sure if its the people who set it up who dont get it right, or the people like me that go in and crank everything to reference. So far my list of speakers that havent survived is 3 of theese

, all in the "presentation" room, which I think is about 6000 cu ft. with all of them I was actually listening below reference, but in a room that size the receiver is probably having to run really really hard. So a bit of advice, DO NOT buy those monster speakers.

Every time I have been in the Fry's in AZ they have all of the subs turned up all the way with the crossover as high as it could go. MAybe theyre just trying to sell to ignorant people based on making the biggest boom they can.

I was new to HT when I bought my velo a few years ago and had my mind set on a Polk sub based on my experience with Polk speakers. They sounded like crap in the Circuit City sound room along with Infinity. I had never heard of Velodyne (or SVS etc...) and the sales guy asked if I wanted to hear the velo...I was blown away by the difference!!! Having a low end velo, I can't imagine what a higher end velo or an SVS sounds like in a HT setup.

So...Why doesn't Polk do better with subs? Just not a core competency that they are worried about improving? The sure know what they are doing otherwise.
