hello ive built my own home theatre subwoofer (kenwood kfc-w3005 175w rms)but on a very low budget, and i am currently using a sony str-de325 reciever/amp to power it. its connected by an rca cable comming from the subwoofer preout of my kenwood vr-506 and into the left input of my str-de325 i was wondering if this is safe to my str-de325 or will it overheat or put to much strain on the amp??? and if so i was wondering if there would be a way to get the power of the 2 channels (L,R) into one mono channel for more power. i know i could split the preamp into left and right but was wondering if i could make the L and R outputs of the str-de325 one for more power.

the 2 channel into mono wont work unless you get a dual voice coil sub driver. layman terms, 2 sets of terminals on one sub driver, each powers its own voice coil. you see them in home and car drivers.

if that driver is 4 ohm, that reciever might have a hard time driving it. when your using it, check the temp on top of the reciever. if it gets very hot, especially fast, then its an issue.

if it functions for now use it. definitly better than nothing.

yeah it works fine after a about an hour or hour and a half it gets warm but not really warm, just a little bit warmer then my other reciever thats just driving my 2 front speakers, yeah it says just under the output 8ohm and i know my subwoofer is 4ohm whats the difference in ohms?? and oh ya thanks for the help!! :)

Ohms are a measure of resistance. If your receiver is only rated to 8 ohms (think of water running through a straw) it will "think" it is being short circuited if you try to run a 4 or 2 ohm load (think of water running through a garden hose). If it is getting warmer than normal maybe it is time to find something that can handle a 4 ohm load. You will probably get a better sound with a dedicated amp anyway.

at lower volumes, might not be a huge issue. but the louder the volume, the more labrat's point will drive itself home.
a plate amp from parts express will do the job, and its one channel, so your not wasting anything. cant mount the amp to whatever box your using? just make a very small box to mount the plate amp too.
