Well, I looked at about 50 different pictures and kinda got an idea on how the FXi3's work. The only thing that I don't understand is that in most of the pictures that I saw the speakers are pointed away from the people. Don't you want the speaker to be pointed toward the people and not diagnal to the people? The RTi4's that I am gonna have in the back are gonna be directed at the people directly and not diagnal so it makes no sense to me why you would have a speaker like the FXi3 pointed away???Harman Kardon AVR 7300

the FX series and the RTi series are different types of speakers.. with the FX ones.. they can be run in bi pole or di pole.. meaning they don't are not direct firing.. the sound is diffused.. so placement isn't as critical as it would be with the RTi which are front firing.
you have to experience a pair of FX type speakers to hear the difference between the two. my FX speakers are run in bi pole mode... with gives the sound a diffused sound to it. they are placed to the side of my seating position.. about 2 and half feet above my head.
FX speakers have sound going to the front and the back.. where by RTi speakers only send the sound forward.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

The FXi series is SUPPOSED to be firing away. The best layman terms I have heard it descibed is that it 'squirts' sounds around the back and sides of the room. When you are hearing mostly sound reflected from walls and other surfaces around the room it makes for a more diffuse surround, as sound in the surround channels should be less localizable and evelope you.
However there are people of the opinion that bipole-dipoles are abad idea and prefer direct firing speakers. Even then, you dont want them to be pointed right at you. As with EVERYTHING in audio *sigh* do what sounds best to you. Why cant these things just be easy?-Stopher
