Anyway, The R series sound much better than other speaker brands like Sony, Pioneer and Yamaha. RESPECT FOR THE R SERIES (Especially for R-30!) ;)
    I second that...;-)

I have the exact same setup (monitor 50s and Onkyo txsr603) and i don't have that problem with harshness. The problem I have is with bass. When I had the m50s hooked up to the onkyo stereo reciever, the bass was unbelievable(I know they can hit that low and need a sub but for 2 5 1/2 inch drivers, they did a great job in my opinion). Yet when I hooked them up to the 603, the bass from the m50s sounded very distorted. A buddy of mine has the R30s with a cheap pioneer stereo reciever and his speakers give better quality bass. I fooled around with everything on the reciever to give better quality bass but still no luck. Are there something wrong with my speakers or do stereo reciever just give better quality sound in the end?

You Need a Receiver with 85 W RMS at less per channel to enjoy the monitors 100%.

Brands..you Know...Yamaha more clean and bright
    Denon great balance
Harman Kardon a little bassy sound.

So are we saying that the Onkyo TR-SX603 sux???

Well, I turned up the volume on the Onkyo TR-SX603 to 80 today (that was loud) and I actually heard some distortion - looks like the 603's cannot handle LOUD music!!! Need some amps.

When I listen to music with my 603, i never put the volume above 65 because it gets too loud(but still sounds very good at that volume except the bass which I mentioned above). Of course you are going to hear distortion at that level, If you are testing with such high volume, you should have definitly bought better quality speakers.

i can max out my AVR130 on my monitor 70s and they will still sound great (neglecting the deafness it could create for me!), except for a slight hiss that comes from the receiver at higher volumes.

When demoing the monitor 50s at the store, they sounded great up until a certain volume at which they would distort. I havent noticed this with the 70s.

Distortion in Monitors .... strange. In a Yamaha 657 receiver, I put the volume to -5db (very high) and sound perfect....i try put biggest volume (my neighboars hate me :P ) ;)

obviously..if you want 0 distortion, you should look the RTi Series...But Monitors, for the price-quality...are very very hardest to beat. :)

Maybe I should play the Monitors really loud till they blow out - so that I have an excuse to get the RTi's :-)

But then folks on this forum seem to say that the RTi's aren't good for music - which is what I use my speakers for.

Maybe I should switch and get the MOnitor 60's then?

crazy, i have a pair of rti 12s as my fronts, these are powered by a denon 3805, and when listening to music in pure direct these sound awsome, the kind of sound i was looking for in a speaker, i havent had the pleasure of listening to the lsi range - they cost too much for me at the moment and i dont like the look of them - but honestly the 12s do sound good for music, take a cd to your local audio shop and see for your self. its the only way

Ha ha...the folks...Yes, it's true :( There are people says the JBL sounds better than Polks...it's funny huh? Listen, for me and most of people in the world, RTi series has the best line of speakers in the moment. Only can be compared with Klipsch or Paradigm.

JBL, Infinity, Athena, Yammie, bla, bla, are INFERIOR. About the monitors...it's the low-end line of speakers, which sounds great anyway. obviously RTi sounds better than Monitors..but the price is more high ;)

The conclusion is: For the price you pay, Monitor has great performance. And pay more, you get RTi's with great performance too. C'mon it's Polk !!!! All speakers have good quality :D

    Bye bye !!!

    Ohhh !!!! Sorry !!!!

Home Theater and Music performance depend your receiver too.

With my Yamaha RX-V657 and Monitors 50 the Movies are GREAT-AWESOME (imagine in RTi series ;) every little sound, every detail is reproduced.

For music, the performance is OUTSTANDING (I like the sound little bright, like Yammies), No distortion at -5 db, very loud, crisp ..etc. FAR superior to JBL E-60 (imagine again the Rti series :) )

    Now yes !!! Bye Bye

I think ALL speakers will distort at some point. I think what he's getting at that with the average decent receiver, they will play plenty loud before audibly distorting

At these point...obviously. If you put the volume to +5 or +10 db. all speakers get a little or medium distortion..but, at this level of volume...your ears blow (don't try) !!!!

Well - so I was able to configure my speakers and receiver nicely thanks to the great help from he fabulous folks on this forum - and it sounds great!! Nice bass management as well :)

I haven't tried playing it really loud and I don't think I will - I'm happy playing at a volume that is loud but yet doesn't hurt the ears. I don't need to know at what volumes my speakers will start distorting or upto what volume can the speakers handle ;)

I hope you don't mind if I jump into this thread. I have Monitor 60's and a PSW10. I made the mistake of buying a receiver (Onkyo 8511) as part of the system. I really had been away from stereos for years and have no idea of what I was doing. Although the system pretty good to my ears, I'm sure others would not see it this way. Question how cheated am I with this receiver? What would the next step up be for me? Amplifer/pre amp set up? I am liking two channel and am not looking at surround sound right now. As you see I am a novice. Thanks for any help.

If it sounds good to your ears, that's all that matters, right?

If you want to upgrade, then seperates are the way to go, seeing that you're into 2-channel and not HT.

Bob, I work at circuit city and we have both the onkyo txnr801($1000) and the onkyo tx8511($300) hooked up to monitor 50 and 70s and the 8511 sounds better hands down so don't put your system down too much. :)

Well it's good to get another's opinion of this set up. Just curious how can the 8511 out perform a high end amp like the 801? Don't get me wrong I like what I am hearing on my system. I just wondered if I up graded to a amp/preamp set up I would get the max performance from the 60's. Thanks for the feedback.

The 801 is not necessarily a "high end amp"...just more channels and more bells and whistles.

IMO what you have with the TX8511, Monitor 60s and PSW10 is a nice entry level 2 channel rig. The Onkyo has plenty of power to drive the efficient Montior 60's to reasonably loud levels with no distortion. The weak piece may be the PSW10. Subs are not Polk's stong point.

If you are happy with your gear, it is a system that can last for a long time. I would enjoy your rig for now while you learn what to do next. The upgrade path is always going to be there. Beware though...there is always a next level no matter how much you upgrade.

The best single item that will take your current system to the next level is the source, whether it be a good CD player and/or turntable. There is nothing at CC that I would consider for a CDP (Well maybe the Sony CE-595 CD/SACD changer - It is considered to be a real bargain at its price-point of $149). I would search this forum and others to see what is out there.

since we are on the subject of cd players Is it ok (sound good) to use a dvd player for your music, or do you have more clarity using just a straight cd player? I get this question all the time at CC and I really don't know if there is a big difference?
