I can't vote because there's no appropriate slot for me.

I have a bar yes, in the main 2ch rig room but it doesn't really get used anymore. Once upon a time many years ago (been in this house for 25yrs now) yes, but now only once in a rare blue moon.

Edit: Oh yeah, it's a permanent bar.

Well, there's not the right response in my case, which is:

Yes, I have a bar in my house, but no active drinkers in the house so the hamster gets to use it for a place to have his cage up and out of sight from the dog and my 12 year old cat that doesn't like to jump very much anymore.

I built one when I finished the basement, but I "don't drink all the time", so cannot vote either....

I have one in my finished basement but oddly enough. Never use the thing.

We end up sitting around the living room or outside on the deck when consuming... except for storage of barwear and bottles I would say my bar is a giant waste of space.

I hammered away in my basement for two years...tried to do it right. Tons of drywall, miles of two by fours, wiring , paint, tile, carpet etc. Hand built permanent bar with 10 foot Cherry wood top with plenty of urethane is the focal / gathering point. Even the people that don't drink hang around it. Also it serves as a place for people to eat. If your considering this this, don't do a basement without one. You don't have to be a lush to enjoy it. And always think of..... RESALE..!!!!

I can't vote either because I built one (well actually two), but don't drink all the time either.

It's a lot of fun to entertain in the bar area, have folks over to watch a game, or hang out with the wife on weekend evenings after the kids are in bed. ;)

The one overlooks into the viewing/listening area so you can view the projector from the bar area.

My tops are 3/4" red oak flooring over 3/4" plywood. Lots of work - a ton of sanding, stain, 15 coats of poly, but they turned out pretty nice.

I'll try to attach a couple pics.

I really didn't mean the questions so literaly (so you could have voted if you had one). (it was really a Yes, No, or I'd like one. I just wanted to add a little humor).

The main reason I asked is because I recently built my friends basement, and he wanted a bar. I searched for tops and couldn't find one, so I made it for him (came out nicer than I thought it would. It's a big curved 'L', with the real bar top look).

Since I was recently unemployed (yesterday [see the "unemployed" thread]), and thought maybe I can make bar tops and sell them (by the foot). I was just an idea and I wanted to see if bars were more common than not in the home.

    Adam, nice hang out room!

And thanks for all the responses.

Mike and Pablo, thanks for the compliments.

Pablo, another idea for your bar building business concept is to also include outdoor bars for patios and decks - maybe build them out of redwood or teak.

I have a semi-permanent wet bar I built that resides in our lighted lower level family room. I say semi in that it can be removed if someone didn't want it there. Just unscrew it from wall and cap off plumbing/patch the holes. We don't do much alcohol drinking anymore but its handy for snacks/cold drinks during movie time.

I couldn't find any finished L shaped wet bars that would fit our application so I had to build it. Other requirements were filtered drinking water, space for a small fridge with freezer, room between the bar top and counter top for a small microwave, and storage space. So basically, I designed it from the top down. Bar top surface height is 45" from floor.

It is constructed of solid Oak and Oak veneer plywood. I stuck a small piece of granite left over from the fireplace surround on the bar front. The bar is sectional and screwed together. The sink and backsplash are one section, the L is another. The counter top is one piece, 3/4" pressboard with a Formica counter surface. The bar top is one piece Oak veneer with solid Oak bar rail.

A 20 amp dedicated GFI circuit supplies power to the bar. I used low voltage lighting under the bar top and in the storgage area. A touch switch with three stage dimmer controls the brightness.

    Hi Pablo,

I've got a wet bar in the rear of my home theater that my friends stock with beer and wine. ;)

Its permanent. The top is made of preformed laminate that looks like granite.
The under-the-counter refrigerator was selected for its very low noise levels.

Nice bar set ups guys. Scomp, what I was thinking of making and selling are tops just like yours. Standard oak surface (plywood veneer for stability) with a solid oak rail. Did you make that rail (edging) or did you buy it? (I searched the web, and it's seems really expensive to buy).

I hear you on the expense part Pablo. I spent quite a few hours searching locally, the internet and Ebay myself.

I purchased the bar rail. I can't lay my hands on the receipt right now, but I am fairly sure it was this place in Peroia, IL. Shipping wasn't bad since Peoria is only around 128 miles from me.

They had an add on Ebay, and at the time it was less than the $14 per LF they show now. Even at this price, it is still less than half of what some lumber yards and Menard's wanted when I was shopping for it last year. Highest price was at Menard's, $36 per LF.

The style of bar rail I have just rests on the edge lip of the bar surface. There are other rail designs that require layering the bar top or having staggered mounting heights to attach both outside edges.

I buily my bar also; for the top I bought the rail here:

    http://commerce.idmi.net/ecommerce/catalog.asp?CID=114&CI=628

High quality finish. I obviously had to stain, and then I put I think 6 layers of clear poly.

they are the cheapest I found at the time.
