I amped my lsi15's tonight with an adcom 5503 and don't really notice any significant difference. Just slightly deeper bottom. It is a brand new amp. Is there a significant difference after the break-in period and how long does this usually take. Also I have yet to push them as I was scared to before I got the amp and speakers are still relatively new as is the amp of course. Just looking for expert thoughts.

What are you using for a pre amp? Is your set up 2 channel (music) or HT?

Any set up is only as good as the weakest link and in this case that may very well be the AVR. Got any friends with a real pre amp that you could borrow?

Showing my ignorance here but what will a preamp do relative to a receiver? I have had no experience with a preamp before as this is the first time I have ever used an amp. Thank you for responding to my thread.

AVRs tend to sound bland with 2 channel sources. They are made for switching processing and do the HT thing pretty well, but lack detail and clarity compared to even entry/mid level dedicated preamps. Where are you located, Mick? There may be a CP member in your area that could help with a listening session.

You were using just the pioneer before hooking up the amp?

Very minimally for a few days until my amp arrived. The guy at the audio store that I purchased the pioneer and the lsi15's said that it would be okay. I kept a close eye on the receiver as it did get hot and I did not turn it very loud.

I was thinking of adding amplification and was surprised that you didn't see much difference. I run just a receiver and I'm not worried about hurting anything, but thought amps might give a better sound. I suppose the amps would give more range on the loudness end of things.
Asd long as you are not driving to distortion you should not hurt your receiver.

I must admit I did expect a more fuller sound and a larger impact in the sound. Part of the reason it could be is that the amp and the receiver both use mosfets, so the sound may be similar. I am going to see if I can get my hands on a preamp next week to try and I'll let you know if it made an impact.

I'm very interested. I'm going to amp up one of these days but my setup sounds great right now. I'm sure a good pre-amp will make a diference but to get one with all the features my receiver has....ouch $$$$$
The Outlaw pre-amp amp combo seems to be a good bang for the buck.
Let me know what happens next.
