I have seeing this player everywhere. Is it hype or should someone looking for a dvd player jump on this bandwagon like everyone does with SVS?

I am being honest about knowing if this player is worth it..with a Bday in 2 months and wanting a better player than I have.......

Thanks

Yeah I'm curious too. I want a new dvd player and not just some cheapo POS. This Oppo player seems like a good deal. I'm also looking at the Cambridge DVD55 player for $200 from Audio Advisor...

I have this for a couple of months. Video quality is top notch via DVI output (Actually it is 2nd to only Denon DVD-5900 which sells for $3500). Build quality is what you can expect from a $200 player, and the remote sucks.

I have heard that Oppo cust support is great and they regularly post firmware upgrades to fix issues or add features.

The player also supports DVD-Audio but I haven’t yet tried that.

    Thanks

I'll have to be sure Harmony 659 can work with it ?!

Did you try component? I would probably use either DVI/HDMI, but in case.

Go to the Secrets of Home Theater Hifi website for all the test details.

The problem with the player is that it can not up-convert via Component cables, only through DVI.

I agree with BIZILL on all except the wait for HD-DVD. The format war is still flaming hot and I would not spend the money yet for a device that may not be supported (look at BetaMax). As an interim DVD player that will make most of your current DVD's look better, the Oppo is a good buy. I have been very happy with mine. I do not plan on being an early adopter of the HD-DVD/BRD formats.

    my 2 cents.

What kind/quality of DVI cable do you use Lou. I want to know if monster is that much better at transfering the signal than standard DVI cables. If I get this DVD player then I have to invest in a DVI cable and thats going to cost me around $40 at least for a good one if there is such a thing.

I have a Monster that I was able to get dirt cheap (BB Open package discount). I also have the one that came with the Oppo. I have compared the two and see NO DIFFERENCE.

Not sure if Oppo is still offering the DVI-HDMI cable, but they do provide a DVI-DVI. You could just pick up a DVI-HDMI adapter for about $15-20 if you need HDMI.

I had the Monster high end one and one from a computer store. I sold the Monster, no difference, and I am very picky about PQ.
