Belt Vs Direct - Pre-amps

I know you must've heard this a 1000 times, but what is best at low prices: a belt or a direct drive turntable?
And what does a "normal" amplifier need in order to be used as a pre?
Thanks in advanced

To be used as a pre- an AVR (aka receiver or integrated) needs to have pre-outs. These are outputs that are controled by the volume knob.
Direct vs belt. Tough call, what's your budget & we can throw out some suggestions for which tables to get.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19
Gallo Ref AV, Frankengallo Ref 3, LC60i : Bryston 9b SST : Meridian 565

thanks for the help. my amplifier doesn't have pre-outs. only phono/tape1/tape2/tuner/aux ones. still, isn't there any alternative way?
As for the money, at this moment I only have 150 euros to spend. I bought this old Leak (made by lenco) direct drive turntable for 75euros, but the rubber around the disk, that allowed the friction, started to desintegrate and I don't know if it is possible to repair.
Thanks -
Euros, eh? If you can go to 200 that should cover a pro-ject debut- which I know is available in Europe. I'm not too sure about the used market over there; you should be able to find a used Rega, that's usually a safe bet.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

On the pre-amp question-
A preamp does two things:
1) Controls volume
2) Selects input
To get both of those from a integrated amplifier, you'll need preouts. You could use the tape outs (which will let you select inputs), but then you'd have to get a seperate outboard volume control.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

how do I get a "seperate outboard volume control"?
thanks a lot for the help and suggestions -

what about a direct drive lenco for 100 euros? -

how do I get a "seperate outboard volume control"? And if I use the tape outs as pre-outs, don't I have to choose the tape monitor button for it to work? (on my integrated amplifier the tape monitor button enables the tape section and disables all the others)

I dont know if he means a preamplifier. Are you asking about a phono-pre?? If you have a receiver with a phono button on the front then you have a phono-input on the back. The small voltage the cartridge outputs cannot be handled by a standard input on a receiver has to be the phono input.
Belt drive TT are generally held to be a higher class than DD. You do have to change the belt occasionally but they dont suffer from the mechanical noise of DD.
At your price point though you may need to go DD, nothing really wrong with them besides what I mentioned and heck, its certainly much much much better than no TT at all.
