hdmi imput on tv

I am just purchasing a JVC 56 inch HDTV. It has a HDMI input and I assume coax (being delivered later this week). Now, I recently purchased a HK AVR 335. It has the three different colored connectors, but no HDMI. In fact, as I believe, there are very few receivers that have HDMI switching. I assume that the HDTV Direct TV sat box will have audio outputs AND video. But, I also thought that HDMI carried both audio and video. Net net, how does this work for the best in HDTV and audio HT?

Use the HDMI cable to hook up to the TV, then use a optical cable to hook up the sat box to the HK receiver.

Or return the HDMI cable and use component. The 335 has component input.
Use either toslink or dig-coax for your sound.

Is there any difference in picture quality between using HDMI, DVI, or component inputs, or are they all just different ways to get the same signal (same picture quality) to the TV?

tests have shown that there is no difference in video quality between the three types of connectors. the only difference is the HDMI and DVI are all digital cables, and component is analog. but picture quality is the same..

With HD cable, I do not think I can tell a difference between HDMI and component on my projector.

However, with my DVD player, using the upconversion through the HDMI is a significant improvement (less noise, smoother more film-like picture) over sending a 480i or p signal through component. The upconversion is only available through the HDMI, so I believe this improvement is from the upconversion, not inherently from HDMI.

Bottom line - based on my experience, I would only experiment with HDMI if you have an upconverting DVD player.
