Well, before you get a hundred SVS suggestions, let me at least suggest auditioning some Martin Logan subs. They make, in my opinion, some of the best subs available. Deep, rumbling, visceral impact for movies, but tight, accurate and full sounding for music. Truly the best of both worlds. A Grotto is a single 10", goes to 22Hz and has a lot of force for a small to mid size room. A larger room, such as 15x20 or larger, could use a step up to the Depth, 3 8" drivers in triangular array-cancel each other's backward bass to create an inert box and very accurate sound. No messy boom or bass lag with these subs.
Grotto runs $1000, Depth $1750. Try to find a local dealer to check them out. The Magnolia Home Theater in Best Buy should at least have the Grotto on display, however there may be full-line dealers near you too. I had an SVS PB 10 ISD, and while it was great for movies, it lacked that tightness and accuracy I was looking for in music playback. In my humble opinion, this is indicative of most ported subs, which ML's are not.
Check out http://www.martinlogan.com/ to get more details on the subs and dealer locations.
Another plus to the ML subs is that they are not your usual big box shape, making them actually quite attractive, and they are relatively small, helping to save space in the room and help the spousal acceptance factor. SVS subs are practically end tables.
