I down loaded an sacd copy of some classical in flac format and the sound is so much better than mp3's. I was wondering if any one knew were I could down load some flac files for free. Most of my music is in mp3 format and reencoding the to flac would do nothing for the(except make them take up more hard drive space. Any genre would be a help. Thanks for any input anyone can give

.FLAC is definetly the way to go as it's lossless. I'm not aware of any site that use FLAC as it's default for download. It's mostly used on peer to peer groups or as an alternative to Mp3's for one's own personal use. The file size is 20-25% smaller than a typical .WAV or .CDA file. You're right no sense in converting your current Mp3's to FLAC as the original SQ cannot be recaptured from an Mp3.

the live music archive has quite a number of download options, all (or almost all) is live material, with no copyright problems. most all are flac or shn downloads with mp3 as well so you can sample. lots of different genre's but mostly emerging bands, not too many hugely popular ones:
