SDA-SRS... What is better out there?

No, I don't plan on selling my SDA-SRS. Just wondering what the upgrade path would be. :)

Price would have to be something in the $7K to $15K used or $15K to $35K new.

They should be fairly efficient to use with tubes and must be full range. All areas of sound should be at least close to SDA's, hopefully much better in many areas.

Any ideas?

Many Moons ago I was at a convention in Chicago and there was a group there that had some Genesis speakers. Not sure what model they were, as they were somewhere on the order of 200K (?). But the sound was unbelievable. I haven't heard anything since then that I can compare them to. I just remember that I stayed in that room for a very long time just listening to Jazz, and I hated that Genre (back then)

I just did a quick search on the bay and there is some Genesis speakers on their, these aren't the same, however, it was the same layout, the ones at the convention were larger...

Genesis 201 (if you care to do a search), If only I had 15 large sitting around....

What about the Amazings? No like with tubes? Gone?

I'd love to own the top end MLs. But, it's not going to happen unless I build a dedicated audio room.

The speaker that seems to come closest in terms of size, scale, and driver placement to me is the Legacy Audio Whisper. 94dB efficient too. Can't set them close to a wall like the SDA's though, so placement would be an issue for most homes.

That's just the thing, isn't it!?! You'd have to spend at least that much to better the SDA's and with the new tweeters, high quality crossover upgrades and top notch gear running them I'm not so sure there's any point in spending that kind of money on new speakers.

I'll agree with F1...SDA's sure are going to be hard to beat. I've been very interested in the Revel Ultima series. Haven't heard them and way out of my $$$ range. But certainly worth looking at. 50W tubes may not be a good match, 86 db, spl, 6 ohms nominal.

Chuck has the Original Amazings which are absolute PIGS to drive. In my larger room even the Silver 9t's at 575wpc were struggling. The Plats which are still power hungry are much easier to drive.

It's all a matter of personal preference....were I to drop 15K on a new set of speakers? Easy, the new Beemer 800D

Oh no, they are still here. I'm really not looking for new speaks, just posing the question. Besides, I haven't even tried the maggies yet. Thanks for holding on to them for me. :)

Actually, I used a 250wpc Soundcraftsman amp with the amazings and they sang really well in quite a large room. Right now they are still waiting for the cap and wire upgrade. Just not a very high priority. I just got to wondering what a person would upgrade to if they ever got tired of the SRS.

Truthfully, anyhting less than 10K and I'm guessing we are talking small improvements in some areas and small decreases in performance in others. I was just wondering what really outclasses the SDA's in many areas.

Again, I don't really think it's money per se.....just preference.

In an empirical sense, if you were to try and buy SRS level performance, yeah, I think 10K isn't a stretch. Doesn't mean that a person couldn't find a pair of speakers he liked better at a much lower price, again, you can't put a price on personal preference.

    For me?

I've got one more, ok, 2 more pair of speakers I want to own. A pair of Quad ESL's. The 63's are within range and a pair of big Beemer 800's.

Realistically, in 2-3 years, my speaker lineup will be:

    Carver Amazings (Plat's in oak)
    AR9's
Quad ESL's (63's, I dunno if the 988/989's will drop enough in price)
    SDA SRS 2.3tl's

The Beemers are when I hit the lotto speaks.

No kidding. I am the same way, and its doesn't help with the SDAs. I cannot listen to them if I am not in the middle of them, perfectly.
