Over the past few months I have tried to put together a serious HT set up. I was big into audio/video as a teenager, but seemed to loose my real interest as job and marriage tended to shift my focus. Sure, I had the Sony ES AVR in the den, but it dated back to about 1991 and only had ProLogic. My speakers were a mix of Phase Tech, Infinity, and Polk Mini Monitors, with a passive sub thrown in. It sounded better than the TV speakers, but did not get the blood pumping!
We completly reworked the living room, and turned it into our 'HT', and I started to piece together a respectable HT set up, now I am so glad we did.
While me and my wife sure enjoy getting to see movies on our own that kids do not wish, or should not watch, the best times are getting in there as a family and enjoying some time together.
To see my kids (son 5, daughter 3) sitting on the wrap around couch, and diving for cover under the pillows as the sound builds to a scarry part, or there is a big explosion that you do not just hear, but feel!
Last night we all watched Finding Nemo, the kids seemed to enjoy a unexpected event as much as the movie! I had moved my PSW 505 sub (I know, get a SVS!) to a new location to experiment a bit, it now had it's back facing ( 3' away) one end of a curtain/drape. During any part of the movie where the sub was putting out a lot of pressure, the curtain would react as if a ghost had hit it! During a substanial blast, it would just seem to dance. The kids laughed their heads off at this!
I know, this may seem silly, but it was just a evening of enjoyment with the whole family together. The best part is it was from an investment in something that I had somehow lost my interest in over the years. It is good to be back!
