What a 50 mph rear-end collison does ...

To my Grand Cherokee. Tuesday morning, on my way into the office, stopped at a red light, a Dodge Dakota comes over the hill behind me and plows into the rear of my Jeep at what the investigator estimates as at least 50 mph. He never hits the brakes or tries to veer into the ditch. I took the main blow, however the impact shoved all four vehicles in front of me together. I am one hurting unit, working from home and trying to recover!

I will assume there will be a lawsuit. That being said, be very careful what you say here on the board as the lawyers will look for anything to show that u were fine or u said u were OK. Get checked out completely since something might not show up right away. A friend of mine was hit and it got nasty once the other guy hired a lawyer. They will sue u. He ended up with a six figure settlement but has constant neck and back pain.

    Man! Ouch!

Glad you're at least in condition to be able to type! Don't know how bad you're hurt, but I hope you recover soon/easily enough. That totally sucks for your Jeep. Hope you weren't carting around any audio gear in the back! :D

nadams - If you look at the bottom left corner of the back panel of glass in the back door, you can see that the rubber surrounding the glass is not flush with the door. That makes me think that the glass is still straight, while the door bent.

Hmm...working at home...give you more time to rock out?

nadams - the glass is actually popped out of the door frame. The amazing thing is the lack of glass breakage! The sunroof glass cracked from the roof buckling and the windshield glass cracked from a rear headrest that shot like a rocket into it. Something to be said for vehicles with some sort of steel framework. The frame is buckled on both sides all the way up to the motor mounts as it tried to absorb the impact. Gas is expensive, however I am now thinking that spending a little more on gas to drive a bigger vehicle in Chicago traffic is not a bad thing!

I've been rear-ended several times. Usually after a few days you really feel it. After a few times I got to the point where I was just pissed off. So far, nothing permanent. Never anything to the extent of your wreck, maybe 25 mph.
    Good luck!

What the hell was the other guy thinking, coming over the hill, no attempt to brake or avoid? Hopefully your injuries will not follow you around for the rest of your life. Take Care

One of my neighbors got rear ended last week, 70 mph hit. 1:30 am, the lady is (was) an elementary school teacher coming home from the bar.

She made out without a scratch, his back and one leg are a little jacked up. It even broke his seat (and he's not a very big dude at all.) *edit* looks like your seat broke also.

Damn right crumple zones. It was a 2004, cracked the frame in several places. Made me think of Ford's ad campaign on their new 'fully boxed' frames.

Passive safety is so much better now. 10-12 years ago and both these accidents could have resulted in either party being seriously injured. Scary **** :(

I got rear ended by a Chevy pickup at a stop back in '02, only he was going around 30 MPH and I didn't hit anyone else. The worst part was seeing his 10 year old boy laying on the floor of the truck crying. He wasn't buckled in and hit the dash. No seat belt, no insurance, no brains.

I hope there are no long term injuries out of this Doug. Take care, rest, recuperate.
