Current setup for subs in my '93 240sx fastback:
2 Alpine Type R 10" dual 4 ohm VC
1 cubic foot box
US Amps USA1000x rated at 1000w rms X1 @ 4ohms
I currently have a ppi pcx2400 brand spanking new coming in later this week.
PPI PCX 2400 is rated at 1600w rms X1 @ 4ohms
I'm looking for some tight, punchy, and loud bass, The alpines are good but I want more. I'd prefer sticking to 1 or 2 drivers but I can do 4 if I get tempted enough.
Few things I've been kicking around:
one Kicker SoloX 10 or 12 (I get get it fairly cheap through CC accom.)
two L7 10s (also cheap for me but not as good as I want)
one or two Adire Brahma 12 or 10s perhaps a Tumult??
one or two ID IDMAX 12 or 10s
any more ideas?
Also, anyone know a good place that can wind me a better alternator. I'm waiting for this one to jump out of the engine bay screaming in agony.

i'd not put the mm2124 at that level, but none of those subs is a slouch...
the solox would be more SPL-oriented, especially compared to the others on your list... another sub to go in this category would be the RE ****...
the idmax is well-respected around here, especially by (if i remember correctly) poweredbydodge...
i'd vote for the tumult out of principle - there's rock-solid engineering and science behind those drivers, though i admit i've never heard one...
and i kinda have to pimp my brand here - eclipse makes a very nice subwoofer, specifically their sw9100-series... worth a listen, if you can manage it (if not, listen to the sw7100 series, then imagine the same sound but louder...)It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

I've heard a few good things about these guys and one sub catchs my attention.

not a bad price it seems, but I'd be overpowering them a little
As far as Eclipse goes I'd have to force myself to wait for Circuit to finally get the stuff because I wouldn't be able to justify to myself paying full price when we're gunna be carrying it in a few months. I'm a bit impatient-Joe -
Soundsplinter makes some very good subs.
Premium Series (RL-p) - http://www.soundsplinter.com/rlp_premium_series_12_and_15_inch_subwoofer.html
Ignition Series (RL-i) - http://www.soundsplinter.com/rli_ignition_series_8_inch_and_10_inch_diy_subwoofer_drivers.html
The RL-i's are known to be very clean playing subs http://www.soundsplinter.com/rli_series/rli_10_inch_DIY_car_and_home_subwoofer_driver_information.html. Their speakers are made by TC Sounds (http://www.tcsounds.com/), same guys that Eclipse also deals with. Their RL-i's are based on the TC+2 design (http://www.tcsounds.com/TC2plus.htm), and the RL-p's are based on the TC9 (http://www.tcsounds.com/TC9.htm).
Arc Audios ARC 12's are also nice subs. http://www.arcaudio.com/arc-05/subwoofers/arc_12d4.htm
Here is a review for it - http://www.arcaudio.com/arc-05/pdf/sub_reviewfi.pdfAlpine: CDA-7949

Another option came to mind of getting 4 Infinity Kappa 10vq but i'm shying away from that idea.At that point I could even do 4 10" MOMO but the box for facilitating 4 drivers takes up most of my, not very big, cargo space even with my amps mounted in the spare tire well.not to mention the power output of the amp has a good possibility of make the MOMOs into toasty critters. The ARC line looks good but i'd be a bit leary of jamming 800w rms into each of them since they are only rated at 300w rms. The sound splitters also look good but lack a driver that fit's my power output. I like my bass to be punchy so if I can avoid going with larger subs I will unless you guys can give me a little input.
:edit: I just realized how small of an enclosure you can use with the RL-i 10 so doing 4 of them wouldn't be that hard. I've got a shitload of options now. I think I need some guidance in whitling down this list. Seriously what's worth the money here?-Joe -
honestly? all of them
really, you just have to get out there and hunt people or stores down that carry the product... you don't necessarily have to listen to the exact same one (e.g. i listened to eclipse's aluminium series and bought their titanium based on that), but that's a plus...
go out there, listen to a bunch, and find a kind you like... if you still can't decide, tell us which ones you listened to that sounded good, and we can go from there... for example, if you liked the sound of a planet audio big bang series, i'd reccommend the L7 or solox...It's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

The thing is over here in Massachusetts car audio isn't big. That make finding dealers with most of the higher end brands is a PITA. I have listened to the a lot of Kicker's but mostly Comp VRs and L5s. I've only heard one L7 12" in a ratty accord that rattled like a ****. I haven't had the pleasure of listening to any stuff from Adire, ID, Ascendant, SS or Arc. I've heard a few eclipse subs but I don't even remember what series they were, and i'm pretty sure the person had them serverely underpowered. I've heard plenty of polks and I like them, but they can't handle the power (make the SR subs damnit ).-Joe

humm... you might have to purchase based on reputation, then... i honestly believe that you'll be happy with any of them, but if i was forced to characterise each of them, this is what i'd say (and take this with a teaspoon of salt, because i've only personally heard about half of them)
Kicker SoloX: Loud, less punchy
Adire Tumult: Awesome linearity, even at volume
Image Dynamics IDMAX: loud and clean
Polk MM2000: smooth and buttery (though not to the level of the others)
SoundSplinter RL-p: crisp and clean
Eclipse SW9100: extremely tightIt's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

It's settled i'm going with 2 Polk SR 10s. Bye bye paycheck....-Joe
