If you had a choice. Would you guys upgrade to better audio cables or better video cables? I guess what I'm asking is that which one do you think would give you better improvement, upgrading to higher end audio cable, or upgrading to higher end video cables.

I guess it would depend on whether you watch more TV or listen to more music.

It would depend on what you hope to accomplish?
Do you want a better picture or better sound?
Which of your cables do you like the most?
How many of each will be required to replace them as sets?Skynut

Also, what are all of the components, including current cables, that are involved? Are you looking at just cables between the sources and the receiver? Are speaker cables included in the mix?
Please give as much details that you can on your current setup.

I am starting a new complete system, tv, dvd, reciever, speakers, ext. It is going to be used for both music and movies. I have no cables yet, so I'm starting from scratch. I guess an example would be, would I notice a bigger improvement in buying high end component cables for the dvd player, or buying high end speaker cables for the speakers. I really want the best of both worlds, it just that I don't want to overspend on a cable that I will not notice a great improvement.

Audio cables/video cables- to me it doesn't matter where they go as long as they're of good 75ohm quality and shielded. "Component" cables and "Digital Coax" RCA cables doesn't make sense- you're spending more $ b/c of the "Component" and "Digital Coaxial". The regular analogs with RCA terms will do just fine- as long as they're of good quality.

I really don't have a budget, but I don't want to spend more than $600.00

For $600.00 you should be able to get some nice cables for both.
I would recomend good interconnects for the audio and video. then start off with some good gauge speaker wires from rat shack or Homey depot.

I also have another question. Should stick with the same gauge seaker wires for all my speakers, or can I use a larger gauge for the fronts and center, and a smaller gauge for the surrounds?

Get a hold of Frank Dai at Signal Cable. He can provide you with very good quality cables, both audio and video, for the entire system.
Tell him your requirements and inform him you are a member of Club Polk (he will give you a discount).
Your cables will be custom made, highly regarded and well reviewed. You won't be disappointed.
For the speakers, at least 12 AWG for the fronts (keep the same length) and center. The surrounds and rears need at least 14 AWG, unless you have long runs, the 12 AWG.
