audio hookups

A guy at Radio Shack today told me that if I only had a 3.1 system (right/left/center/sub) and no rear satellites that I should not hook my components(cd player/dvd) up by optical or digital coax, and only use the analog cable until i get a 5.1 system. He said that the digital cables would try to send sound to the rears and I would not get complete sound. Does it matter what receiver i have (hk avr435 on its way) Any thoughts?

Hey, I consider myself a novice. I try to get info wherever I can. But I would have to say that I really appreciate all the info that I have gathered here.

He did show them to me. (only digital audio they carried) but he did say that he wouldn't put any of their rear surrounds in his house so I know he wasn't completely FOS.

Can someone tell me what the proper cross over setting is? I have the RM6700 satelite system with a PSW 202 sub woofer and a Harmon Kardon AVR 130 receiver.

The satelite specifications say the -3db limits are 130hz, does this mean I have to set the cross over to 130 hz or higher?
