Just received the new Music Hall MMF-5SE and Nitty Gritty 1.5 cleaner today. Easy table to setup and has nice eye appeal. I'd been shopping for the MMF-5, but found this at a good price at Upscale, so pooped for the nicer plinth and upgraded Goldring G1022. Off to the LP stacks I go!

    Very shiny...

I'd never gotten past Upscale's tube offerings. Did not snap to fact that they handled TT's and other gear....

Nice TT Mike, Troy's standard mmf5 is plenty good as is but i'd imagine cartridge upgrades make notable changes in presentation.

    Yup, smart grab.

Lot of performance for a budget table, IMHO

Good deal Mike, I thought you moved away from TT's though... If you wish to try one of my preamps let me know. I have an Acoustech PH1P and one of the Jolida tube output JD9's. Funny, I logged in tonite looking for a new one, either the Sutherland PH.D. or the Manley. The manley is out of budget but if I could find the right one on audiogon... In any case, Congrats!!!

    Thanks guys!

I'm 56, and have more hours in front of vinyl than I'll ever live to have with CDs. I've always had a respectable table and preamp around since the early 70's. This upgrade was a total and unexpected shock.

I know you've all experienced things in your life that absolutely set you back on your heels. I just finished a session with Leon Russell's "Will O' the Wisp", which I bought new in 1975, that was just such an experience. Leon has always been a favorite, so this album has had plenty of spins over the last 30 years (and it's a personal favorite I'm very familiar with.) I feel like just heard the album for the first time. It's that much of a night and day difference in sound quality. I'm floored. Speechless. ****!

Don't ya just love that feeling?

I've always been a Leon fan and he still sounds pretty much the same today. I played a little "Leon Russell and the Shelter People" for Mark last trip. He grabbed the name for a buy.

    Dave,

Troy got me headed in the right direction -- good advice.

    Chuck,

Yeah, I haven't spent much time with the old table for awhile. The combo of this table and clean recordings is a revelation though. I'm using my Stax pre at the moment and it sounds excellent, but I may take you up on the offer to audition a few others. The Transcendent phono stage, if anywhere near as good as the GG line stage, would be a rewarding build project.

    Bruce,

Kevin (Upscale) has excellent pricing on gear as a rule. He also gives a **** about his customers, which is refreshing in today's world.

I suggested MH as an entry level, entry level my ****, to a buddy searching for a modern TT....I like that brand, and the price bracket they simply dominate.

I've dealt with Kevin at UA and he's a real cool guy, absolute cut to the chase guy on the phone if you know what I mean, but I don't find his prices too awesome, as it depends on the gear. I honestly like the way he does business as he doesn't pull punches, to the point he can be an ****....but we get along famously :D

When he has a really good deal, you often have to be real quick, as it goes fast, this sound like one of those deals. I think he's one of the better online, private (r)etailers in the market.

Congrats!!! That is a beautiful table! I have had my MMF-7 for going on 3 years and have ZERO complaints. It has been an outstanding table, and seems to have kept the upgrade bug at bay (fingers crossed) :).

I've also been comparing budget tables to go on my HT system and I think I'm going to end up with another Music Hall. Probably the MMF-2.1. It seems nothing else in that price range offers both adjustable VTA and Azimuth. It's amazing how much they pack into their tables.

Well enjoy the new toy. I'm sure it will give you many years of enjoyment.

    Happy Listening!

Thanks! The last one (Technics DD with Mayware Formula IV) lasted 35 years. If I get that kind of miles out of this one, I won't be able to tell if it sounds good or not. :D

That's a sharp looking TT for sure....but, I'm still not a vinyl fan.

I'm waiting on one of you folks to rock my world like Ken Swauger with that R2R. I've heard hardcore TT in my travels, and heard a 100K setup at CES that was very moving, but......

Mark--well your aversion may stem from affliction of digitalitize, to much exposure to 0 and 1's from the sprint system!!!

Perhaps, but I've heard far more unexciting and expensive vinyl setups than the digital alternative.

No doubt vinyl is work, as such its harder to control all the variables that go into getting pure clean vinyl analog sound. My return to vinyl has been both frustrating and rewarding.

Can't deny there is a bit of the nostalgia factor in it for me.

I'm certainly not going to go 100% vinyl here. I have so many small label/regional/esoteric LPs that I'm confident will never be released on CD. This is a way to enjoy them once again.

Every medium has its pleasures and pitfalls. For me, analog sources have a distinct linearity in their dynamics. By that I mean the rise and decay of sound, complete with harmonics and sub-harmonics, seems "natural" -- without argument, a subjective term based on personal experience. Due to the long history I've enjoyed with them, I can (if you will) filter any sound artifacts from the mechanics of reproduction.

I have some fairly decent analog and digital recording equipment. What might best demonstrate what nuances appeal to me, and possibly others, could perhaps be done in the following manner. We can simultaneously record a short passage of live guitar or organ play in both mediums, while of course witnessing the originating event. Then, as quickly as possible, we can play back the event in both mediums -- with the real time option to hear the passage repeated, if desired. Sound interesting?

By the way, I have no desire to "convert" anyone. In fact, I might gain considerable insight from the perceptions of others who much prefer other mediums.
