Greetings,

I am scheduled to get a set of Polk spekaers today to complete my 5.1 setup (I already have Polk Monitor 50's). I'm really excited about this and can't wait to hear DVD-Audio which I've heard is amazing.

So - does anyone have sugegstions of DVD-Audios out there that really show-off a 5.1 setting?

Also, any suggestions on where I can get inexpensive DVD-Audios?

Thanks!

    Welcome Crazy.

The search button is a wonderful feature.

If you are willing to buy used, look into Amazon.

I like Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral. It is DVD-A.

I also have a DTS Surround CD The Uncommon Bach.

You can also download some really cool DD or DTS WAV files and make your own CD's or stream them to your AV system like I do. They can be found at the following sites:

i gotta go ahead and recommend AIX records (www.aixrecords.com). i have two of their offerings and they are top notch. i would highly recommend lawrence jubar's "guitar noir" if you are into accoustic music! they are pricy (~$25 each) but well worth the money.

Also ensure you look at the label. You didn't mention whether or not you are going to be using a capable DVD A player. Your player must have 6 Analog Channels out, and you have to also have a receiver/pre cabable of accepting the ouput on a DVD-A player to get the Hi Res content to play.

However there are many DVD Audio discs that also have a DTS or DD soundtrack embedded in them if you don't have a capable player/receiver...

You'll have to google for them. That's your only hope.

Elliot Scheiner is THE 5:1 guru as far as mixing. Get all of his stuff starting
with the Eagles HFO and the new live in Australia, Steely Dan Two against nature live dvd and dvd audio and Everything must go, Roy Orbison's
Black and White night is fantastic as is Becks Sea change on sacd.
His mixes are aggressive and use the rear channels much more than most mixers. Floyd's Dark side of the moon is stunning in 5:1 sacd as is Brothers
    in arms by Dire Straits.

i've heard many DTS ES mixes on DVD video that sound just as good if not better than their DVD-A counterparts. No ****. The REM disc is one of them. And all you have to do is use one little TOSLINK cable. :)

Thank you all for your help. I believe that my DVD player can play DVD-Audio. I got a demo DVD-Audio disk that my friend got with his Acura TL and will try ti today.

Amazon seems to have some great deals on DVD-Audios - around $14-15, wow! Once I make sure that my DVD is cable of playing DVD-Audio, I need to go shopping :-)

Has Elliot Scheiner done any smooth jazz recordings?

Any suggestions for great 5.1 smooth jazz mixes?

I'm really interested in instrumental music in 5.1 (not classical) - would greatly appreciate any suggestions in the lines of smooth jazz, new age (not a big fan on Enya though) etc.

Anyone's heard the Acura TL DVD-Audio demo disk? It is just amazing!! That is Elliot Scheiner and I really want to find more of his stuff but not vocal stuff.

    THANKS!!!

Here is a link with a discography for Elliot Scheiner:

He doesn't appear to do much smooth jazz but definitely get his Eagles
and Steely Dan dvd audios, they're fantastic in 5:1.

Ditto on the Nine Inch Nails "Downward Spiral" 5.1 version, great recording, as well as the new "With Teeth" album and the live DVD are great as well. Trent Reznor is really great at producing and mixing albums for 5.1 not just to do it but for really understanding why a sound should come from a certain channel and unerstanding the purpose of placing sound. He;s a genius IMHO. Great subtle yet complex instrumentation and production all throughout. Its hard to find people who appreciate NIN within the 'audiophile' or HT hobbyist community though, yet I think his recordings really would be great demos for people with nice setups, making them 'shine' and show MAJOR differences from other mainstream sources. Maybe because most people who have money to blow on audio tend to be older? Dont wanna stereotype or offend anyone though :)

Also I think both the Eagles Hell Freezes Over and Farewell Tour DVD's are great. The Hell Freezes Over in particular tends to show off the clarity of a speaker. In fact 3 of the place sin phoenix here use HFO as a regular demo disc whenever i walk in the store.

In my humble opinion, I have the Metallica DVD (Metallica: S & M) where they perform with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and it is amazing even if you don't care for that kind of music. It is very impressive. Also, the Dave Matthews Band has a CD/DVD set called Dave Matthews: The Gorge. It is great. Sound and sights are great. I wish I could burn them for you and get you a free copy, but don't have a burner and thanks to Metallica, it's illegal.

I've been trying to purchase the Eagles Hell Freezes over DVD-audio and cannot seem to find it anywhere. Any help there would be greatly appreciated.

    Is a DVD-Video the same as DVD-Audio?

I recently purchased Alicia Keys DVD-Audio - this was the only DVD-Audio available at Best Buy!! Anyone's heard this DVD-Audio? Any thoughts?

So long as you have properly hooked up your dvd player to your receiver & double check all of your settings within your dvd player you should be fine.

The dvd video is amazing in 5:1 even in DTS. There is also a dts 5:1
bonus track of the Eagles singing '7 bridges road' that is stunning in
surround. I'm not sure if it's on the dvd audio.

Folks, thank you for the suggestion regarding Hell Freezes Over - I just purchased it and absolutely love it!

Also, I got "In Absentia" by Porcupine Tree. I had their CD earlier and never really cared for the music but the DVD-Audio is something else - it's mixed by Elliot Scheiner. Check out this review:
