Some tweeter questions...

OK this may seem elementary to some but I am wondering about some tweeter basics.

First the little silk dome that you see from the exterior of the speaker, is that the part that vibrates to make sound? Or is that just a protective barrier for the inside? Is it ok to touch that dome? Can you feel vibrations coming from it to see if it is working like you can a woofer? Will a blown tweeter always sound crackle-y, or will it just go dead or have reduced volume?

For me I just figured the tweeter was pretty delicate and just never messed with it, just sit back and enjoyed it.

The vibrating material is what makes the sound

Why do you want to dick around with it? Just leave it alone, it hasn't done anything to you.

Simple enough that if you did just a little research you probably could have found the answers yourself.

Geez. I never said I wanted to do anything to it. Im just asking questions cause Im curious. By the way I love this forum because I like to learn and gain knowledge. I have had wonderful experiences here and consider it a great resource and try to put back into it and give feedback to others with the little that I do know.

Having said that every once in awhile I see responses from people who seem more interested in being condescending a-holes instead of being friendly and supportive.

    Drop the attitude. :p

Ok, HERE is where the attitude comes into play. Had you not added that little gem, you would have been ok. Nope, you decided it was time to jump off the manners train so why shouldn't we treat you with the same contempt? ****? Pot? Kettle? Black?

If you want to ask a question, fine, ask it. SOMETIMES, it's a question that there is enough information readily available that people figure you could just use the old search function rather than clog up the forum with redundant questions.

Second, this is a forum, we aren't here soley to answer every question that happens to enter your imagination. It's here for our entertainment as well. Novel idea, I grant you but it is what it is.

Since you seem to not grasp basic physics AND you are lazy.....sound is created by making something vibrate. In this case it's silk. Could be metal..could be any number of things. Silk, by nature is pliant and fragile. If you go dicking with it, you will mess it up. So don't. Well, take that back, it's your tweeter, dick away.

So, as a preemptive answer, when you DO dick it up. Contact Polk customer service, they are very friendly and will sell you a replacement.

I put a little smiley face behind it, I hope most people took it in the kind sarcastic spirit in which it was intended.

    Dust settling softly................................ :)

I've heard bad tweeters both ways, crackle and death. Don't recall any reduced volume though. Troy covered the vibrating suface.

5:25am one day to 5:36am the next isn't but a minuscule amount of time to wait for a response here in the Forums. It's not uncommon to have to wait more than 24 hrs for a reply. Give us a chance. The right people 1) have to be online; 2) be in CP; 3) be in the forum in question; 4) be reading the exact post in question; 5) be in the mood to answer the question (for maybe the hundreth time); 6) or have the time to spend on that question as opposed to skipping to something more interesting to them at that point in time, figuring someone else will put in their two cents worth in the mean time. There aren't any guarantees of quick responses. Relax and enjoy.

Don't trip on it, I tend to do the same thing.
If I don't get an answer in a day or so I post something to "Bump" my thread to the top.
When writing a post I think I am being funny but at times people reading my post may think I am being an ****. That is how the internet works.

When I recently blew a tweeter I noticed no sound, when I took the grill off I noticed the dome had partly melted and surrounding the dome was also discolored.

If you touch the dome lightly you are ok but if you push too hard you will be asking us how to pop it back out. So be carefull whenever dealing with the tweeter or any other drivers for that matter.

Welcome to the club, when you are new you need thick skin. Once you have been here awhile you will either fit in or probably go somewhere else.

    Yikes, I feel like I just walked in a husband/wife argument... :).

That thing you see is the dome itself.... it will vibrate and create HF sounds. The magnet will push the tweeter dome from the perimeter, not the center like cone speakers on your woofer.

Troy, based on the guy's earlier insensitive rant about medical insurance, you have nothing to apologize for.

That's just how Troy rolls... cant blame him for that. He's like a Polk grandpa. Crabby at times, but that's just how he is. Good ol' Troy. :)

Thanks for the info guys. As far as our scuffle I was just trying to "bump" it up a bit somehow to keep it current. I'll try to keep in mind how others might perceive it for future posts. I'll be happy to play nice with you from now on Troy :)

Awww man... I thought I was gonna see a good fight..battle of wits and words.. :D

You know I can see how StopherJJ1980 was trying to be funny with his words but it can be taken one way or another. Sarcasm is so hard to write in words vs saying it to someone face to face with facial expressions and different tonal voice. I see how he was trying to be funny by reposting only a few minutes later because maybe Club Polk members answer questions fairly quickly here (I don't know cause I'm a newbie still) but at 5 something in the morning would be a bit early for most of us.

But I still like a good fight. :p:p:p

My post was written the way it was to reflect the fact his second post wasn't minutes after his first but rather a day and a few minutes later. ;)

Sometimes it does take more than 24hrs to get a reply. :)

Was definitely on StopherJJ1980's side, as I thought he wasn't being rude and didn't deserve any attitude in response, but it's amazing what an apology can do. Takes a man to own up and make one....+1!
