I don't think there's many Dimmu fans here but just thought I'd give an update.

There's a new Dimmu Borgir album out now. Well, it's not exactly new but a re-recording of the masterpiece "Stormblast".

I almost pissed my pants when I saw it at the record store. At first I thought it was a re-release but saw the sticker stating that it's a re-recording. I love the original but can't stand the cheapo production.

Now here's the awesome part. The album was re-recorded in the famous Studio Abyss in Sweden where killer bands like Immortal recorded and the disc is HDCD. There's no indication on the packaging but the HDCD LED on my cd player lights up with this disc. The sound is awesome. There's nothing like True Norwegian Black Metal:).

It also comes with a bonus DVD of concert footage at the Metalfest in San Antonio where they performed 5 songs.

I used to listen to Dimmu Borgir...but after a while I realized that black metal is just way too damn heavy for me.

Good band if you like Black Metal though. I liked their cover of Burn in Hell.

    Nesticle,
That Burn in Hell cover was just kick ****! A lot of people find black metal too heavy. A great alternative is power metal like Kamelot, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, etc.

The 'elites' don't even classify Dimmu as black metal because of their use of keyboards and/or symphonic back ups. To me True Norwegian Black Metal have a 'sound' and atmosphere regardless of instruments being used and I find that "Stormblast" is the only Dimmu album that I can call true black metal.

Anyway, "Enthroned Darkness Triumphant" was their last great album, IMO. The ones that came out after only have a few good tracks.

    Karpiel666,
Gee, I can tell you listen to Dimmu just by your screen name lol :D . Let me know what you think of the re-recording.

The original had a lush and cold landscape while the re-recording is cold and brutal because of the acoustics at Studio Abyss. If you've heard any Dark Funeral or Immortal albums recorded in this studio you already know the kind of sound I'm talking about.

I forgot to mention that the CD also includes two new tracks. If they are any indication of where Dimmu's music is going, Cradle of Filth better watch out!

Not much for black metal, a little too dark for me.

I do however, love the Gothenburg death sound. Dark Tranquillity ****ing rules.

Hell yeah. The Gothenburg sound is really something. I really enjoy Dark Tranquility. I need to catch up on them. I only have 2 of their albums. The newest one I have is Projector. So I have a few more albums to buy.

I heard "Monochromatic Stains" on a sample disc and it's pure aggression.

Another band that sounds similar to DT is Trail of Tears (newest album only entitled "Freefall Into Fear"). Their older albums are so so. Blind Guardian is also an awesome band with traces of the Gothenburg sound mixed with power metal. They're not Swedes but still amazing music.

I checked out their site and listened to a sound sample... no offense, but that dude sounds like a frog that smokes 10 packs of cigarettes a day. I liked the orchestral sounds and the guitars, but that voice... ACK!

LOL :D . Well, you either love it or hate it. If you think his voice is nasty, you'd die if you hear Cradle of Filth. Even black metal fans complain about his vocals. I love it.

Here's probably why it sounded too strange to you. The whole album is in Norwegian. That, plus the vocal style can turn a lot of people off.

The symphonic background, guitars and drums is just beautiful. I really like this album for the atmosphere they created.

Yeah, you should definitely check out the newer stuff. Their last three albums ("Haven", "Damage Done", and "Character") are all frickin' amazing.
