Denon DVD-1720 Multiplayer !??

I have been loking at purchasing one of these (don't need the SACD of the 1920 or HDMI) and today went armed with a bunch of DVD-R and CD-R's to my local HiFi shop to see what formats of media it would successfully play.
Pleased to say it passed all my tests except one...
Plays DivX encoded movies (and Xvid) from CDR/RW & DVD-R/RW's, also MP3's from CDR/RW BUT not MP3's from DVD-R media....
After reading a bunch of stuff it would appear that this might be a Denon thing (i.e. they have disabled this function) and that other brands of multiplayers may very well play MP3's from a DVD-R disk...
I guess that even a CDR holds 6 to 8 hours of MP3 music so this is not a major problem to me but it would be a nice to have feature...Oh and I think some players may even do network streaming over ethernet..
Can anyone recommend a competent DVD multiplayer that will do it all ??
BTW: I am thinking of purchasing a Denon AVR-2106 to replace my Marantz SR870 purely for the HT features that my Marantz is missing.
