Whats the best movie you hated?

OK, I am stealing this post right out of audioholics.com. But it got tons of responses there and this is similar to the 'top 10' movie list that was popular here not long ago. So I am interested what you Polkies think about this topic.

What movies didn't you like that you were told you would like?

These can be movies that either:
1) were loved by critics
2) were extremely popular at the theater and in DVD sales
3) movies that people in your peer group said were can't misses.

It's easy to bash Taxi, Herbie Fully Loaded, Cheaper by the dozen, the American Idol movie, etc. But I think this is more interesting.

I'll start, I think there are lots of Oscar movies that have GREAT performances from big name actors, but in the end I just dont care about the plot. These are movies like Monster's Ball, Punch Drunk Love, Million Dollar Baby, Sideways, etc. I usually like weird artsy fartsy movies but some just dont connect with me plot-wise.

That and I tend to hate the Spiderman, ID4, War of the Worlds type movies that are all glitz and no substance. I know I'll catch hell for the spiderman one :)

That reminds me, PLEASE dont flame people for their choices of movies they didnt like. The fact that other people like them is the POINT of this thread.

But a little good natured teasing never hurt ;-)

I wasn't very impressed with The Aviator. It was entertaining and had some great performances, but I didn't think it was worth the hype. The same with The Gangs of New York. Maybe they were just too over stylized.

McLoki, you just reminding me about that scene in Zoolander with the models at the gas pumps. lol That scene is one of the funniest ever put on film :D

Any of the "old classics" that people consider the greatest films of all time - Casablanca, On The Waterfront, etc etc. They just don't translate into modern times. Blame MTV for ruining our attention span, but I can never stay awake for any of those movies.

    Heresy, I know... :)

I'm with MSkeezer, I did not like Gangs of New York. It just seemed to drag on, the love story was awkward, and I did not like the deus ex machina ending with the ships.

    The Thin Red Line.

A friend blind-bought this and we watched it. 1/4 of the way through, everyone watching looked at each other with that "What the f*** are we watching!"

How it got nominated for Best Picture is beyond me. TERRIBLE!

Fear and loathing in Las Vegas.

A friend of mine said this was his favorite movie and I would love it.

    WRONG.

LOTR would have been high on my list also but someone beat me to it.

    Just not my thing.

I am going to have to go with Ledhed,

Napoleon Dynamite - was told I would not stop laughing the whole show. Thought it was just stupid

Alien vs Predator - most people at work had computer screensavers of this one. I just wanted a HT barf bag.

King Kong - wait! I liked this one! Oh well Ledhed, two out of three ain't bad. (on the music side, Meatloaf - Hated two out of three ain't bad song. *smile*)

Kill Bill. It seems for me tarantino is really hit or miss. I do enjoy the twisted nature of the usual films but I just found it boring. (although pulp fiction was alright)

The Ring - man that movie sucked. If I'm going to watch a horror movie, one that has been made with horror being the only interesting part of the movie (eg. lame everything, but hey it's scary right?), I damn well want to be scared. I don't think there was a single part in that movie that made me jump or even feel the least bit of fear.

    My 2 cents on LOTR...

Stayed away from it because I was never into the whole D&D, wizards and warlocks and fantasy thing and thought it was dumb...

Watched my roomate's LOTR 1:FOTR cause i was bored and fell asleep a half hour into it

Still wanted to see what all the hype was about... Watched FOTR again, same result, snoozing a half hour in...

Third try, just got bored and did something else...

Fourth attempt, thought it was ok and watch Two Towers just cause i figured why not see what would come next...

Watched two towers and got sucked in, went to go see Return of the King...

Loved ROTK, watched them all again and really liked the storytelling, effects, detail, etc.

Now its on my Top 10 list as a trilogy. For me I guess this was the DEFINITION of a movie that had to grow on me.
