Do you NEED a phone line for TiVo now?

I wanted a to get TiVo a few months back but the box and the salesperson says I needed phone line to set up the service and the box, from there it could run of my broadband internet. Recently I was on the website and it was a little confusing but I think I understood it as you can now do setup and everything with broadband, no cable since they updated the software. Am I understanding this correctly?

The reason I ask is I dont have a land line phone. Just me and my fiance's cell phones. But I do have broadband of course. Also, does the TiVo unit work directly off the coax cable or do you have to run an ethernet from your router?
