T 90 for 2 channel system

edited January 2006 in 2 Channel Audio
I am looking to put together a dedicated 2-channel system. It will most likely be used in a 14 x 16 room and driven with an Adcon GFA 545 100 wpc amp and a Carver CT 26v pre amp. I will be buying a nice turntable and CD player at some point, but have sources to get by with until then. I see T 90 towers for sale @ Tweeter for $350/pair. I am looking for opinions of these speakers. I will listen to all types of music. Will I need a sub? Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

It's the European version of the Monitor 60....
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Thanks for the reply. So is it exactly the same as a Monitor 60? Do you think these speakers would be a good choice for a 2 channel system or are they more suited to HT? The price is certainly right and I know there would not be much of a loss, but if they are designed mainly for HT I won't waste my time. Sorry for the noob questions.

    Thanks

If you want Polk speakers designed for music, save your money & get one of the LSI series speakers. Those were built for music!

Thanks for the responses guys. I appreciate the advice. The deal seemed too good to be true @ $350 per pair. Too bad I already have my HT needs covered. Thanks again.

While they are the mid-range speakers in Polk's lineup I've heard them and they are suprisingly good. At $350 they are a very good deal. Yes the LSis are better speaker and you've got some pretty capable gear that should drive the LSis easily(often an issue since they require some good amplification). Used is an option (like SDAs) but you have to know what you are looking at and it is often a crapshoot.

If you are on a budget and want something now, I think you would be ok with the T90s. Sean (Zero) had a pair for a while and seemed to be impressed. This in and of itself is quite a statement as he is the audio world's version of "Mikey - the Life Cereal kid" who "hates everything!"

This is a VERY good deal. They are not just HT speakers.

As I said, used can be a crapshoot. However, If you are anywhere near Damascus MD, the first two items in this thread would be AS GOOD as you could find anywhere.

I know the shape they are in and MINT is dead on. You would have to be within driving distance, but if you are...it would be worth the trip.

I ran them for a while on a small 8w tube amp. Fantastic music speakers, and half off, for a current product, new in box? If you are looking for that new car smell - that's going to be tought to beat at the pricepoint.

Agreed you should look at Dorokusai's thread, consider going vintage for even more bang-for-buck.

Of course, I'd throw in that the DQ-10's that Russ has on the block, even WITHOUT the regnar upgrades, are damn tough to beat at three times his asking price.

Great info guys, thanks for taking the time to respond to a new member. I just went to Tweeter and they have them in stock, 4 pair actually. They had them hooked up as well and I was able to A B C several speakers. The T 90s, in my opinion, sounded very good even in comparison to some of the other Polks (RT Series), maybe a little less bass and a little brighter, but still sounded really good, esp for the money. I am going to pull the trigger. Thanks again for all the input.

Ok, bought, set up and playing as I type. I am actually very impressed. They sound much better in my room than they did at Tweeter. I have quite a few Klipsch speakers, Legends and Reference, and quite frankly these are smoother than any of those. I'm going to be very happy with the Polks. Thanks to all for your input.

Congrats :) I was originally in the market for some Infinity Betas, but circuit city was all sold out and i got a nice set of Polk Monitors (as listed in my signature, and at a pretty decent price). I brought them home and have been very pleased with them every since :)

They really have very good bass in my small (12 x 12) room. Much better than the Tweeter Salesman said  Not throw pictures off the wall bass but tight, clean, natural sounding bass. They did a great job with Heavy D as well as AC DC, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac. Now, I know it's the honeymoon still, but I don't think I'm gonna get tired of these any time soon. Sorry to keep going on but daing, I can't get over the price I paid. And being the satisfied owner of alot of Klipsch I am even more surprised and feel fortunate I tried Polk. If these $350 speakers are any indication of what the upper line is like, I may be selling some Klipsch. OK, I'll shut up now. Ya'll know I like 'em! :D

I really like the T90e. I use them for 100% music, and actually replaced some magnepans with these, and like them better! Lack a bit of low end, but great speakers!

I was looking at a higher end Polk, maybe a Lsi something or other, it had a nice piano black finish. Floor model for $1200.

Uh oh...I'm getting that feeling again.......... :D
