Sub too close?

Is there any technical info on putting the sub too close to the listening position? Is right off the end of the couch or behind a sofa too close? With out the of coarse getting kicked feeling. Is there anything that would make a few feet away not allow the bass to develop properly before hearing it, or not to blend properly "calibrated sub of coarse".. I seem to remember a sound engineer telling me something like 4' is what it takes. Is there anyone who had trouble with there sub being to close to them and "had" to move it else where? I have an ideal corner in the rear listening corner it doesn't seem as transparent as when testing it up in the front corner, but I wanted to try moving it a bit closer to the couch and double it as a side table. For a bigger sub that goes <30hrtz. is this too close?

Hi Fab. Put the sub in your usual sitting/listening position and connect it via RCA jack to the back of your receiver. Play a cd that is bass heavy and something that you're familiar with. Walk around the boundaries of the room (or around your couch) until the sub sounds the best to you. Put the sub in that position.

i don't know if that helps you any but good luck regardless.

I find the sub works out fine next to the couch as long as the crossover is not to high. 80hz and above! Then it becomes more localized!

Got mine sitting three feet from me. No problems at all. In fact, some subs are designed to double as end tables.

Even if you can localize your sub a little bit, so what? Your brain will compensate for it after the first few minutes of listening.

yeah Earl is right. Its comparable to wearing glasses.... After you put them on in the morning those nerve cells that feel them basically just shut off and quit sending impulses Similar to your ears shutting off trying to figure out where the sound is coming from.
