*Ok if we could please not make this a debate again on morality or sexuality, please. thanks.

I saw Brokeback Mountain today at the mega plex. A few things stuck out right away when we entered the theater to find our seats. First off.. I like to get in to the movie theater early… so I have a good choice of seats.

When we got there, about 10 minutes before the movie previews started. A good half of the theater was filled already. This is one of the larger auditoriums too. The second thing I noticed was the large older audience. Was quite surprised to see a good number of elderly or at least retirement + aged moviegoers. Maybe it was the matinee prices that brought people out, not sure. Either way. Once everyone was seated the theater was about 85% full. Very few minors. With an R rating, that didn’t surprise me. Everyone was well behaved, which is rare for people to sit thru a 2+ hour movie without gasping or whatever.

We all know about the hype this movie has gotten. Put that aside for a minute though. I do agree with the critics who have praised Heath Ledgers performance in BBM. He really shines in the role of Ennis Del Mar, the lead character. He nails it. (No pun intended). Jake Gyllenhaal also gives an outstanding performance. As do both the lead women.

I’m not good at writing reviews. So this is just a few thoughts, and there won’t be any spoilers.

As for it being nominated for movie of the year. I got to say that it’s not up to that level of quality. Yes the outdoors scenery is beautiful and the sets seems to have been given a lot of thought as to the time it was set in, 1963.
I think Heath Ledgers performace may elavate it's hype

Lastly, it’s just to far fetched of a storyline. It’s really difficult to imagine this type of love story happening in the early 60’s. If it had been set maybe in the 70’s.. Maybe then I could believe it a little bit more. But 1963, ummm I have trouble accepting this. Not that this couldn’t have happen, it just seems to perfect or easy.

Favorite scene: Thanksgiving dinner. :)

I give it a slightly above average rating. C+ to B-

I watched this again over the weekend. I liked it better the second time around. I found it more emotional this time too. So while it's winning a few awards now.. certainly less than it was nominated for. I'll raise my original rating to a B now. after having seen in twice.

Missed your "non-review" the first go 'round... maybe it was the encoded title.

With the Best Pic Golden Globe under its belt, it is going to get more "play" than it otherwise might have, and if it nails an Oscar nomination as well, even more.

I have only seen this movie once but I would agree that its a very good movie. Well shot, well acted, and emotional. Ledger and Gyllenhaal were very impressive, and not just for being able to kiss each other. Its not perfect of course. It is kind of slow at some parts and some of the characters could have used some more development, namely Gyllenhaal and the female leads.

As for the whole best picture thing, I think it deserves it. I have seen some of the other "top" movies and I just don't see any of them challenging it.

My favorite scene(s) has to be the shot with ledger and the fireworks. Though the whole thanksgiving scene, especially the dishes part is a close second.

going to see it tonight at the 7pm show. Much like Dances With Wolves, the film starts out as a very limited release and as word spreads/awards won, it gets released in more theaters.

I'm looking forward to it. My roomate said it was a great film.

A friend of mine told me about the ending of this movie and stuff (since I don't go to theaters in general so probably wouldn't see it for some time if ever). Sounds pretty damned tragic.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Someone else said it best: "Believe it or not people feel strongly about the issues, and don't really think it's 'just a movie', because it isn't. It's a social statement, and it's only going to cause problems as soon as one person weighs in, and they won't be in the wrong for doing it."

I agree. I'm closing this thread. Sorry! :)
