I ran a virus scanner - it found 7 infected files and it quarintined them...

I restarted my computer afterwards and when it booted back up I tried to log in...but then it logs me directly back out. Now I cant seem to get it to stay logged in for no more than a few seconds...

I figured I would try to reinstall windows - but I cant seem to get the disc to run on its own? And I cant get to the desktop, as far as i can get is the log on screen...

What should/can I do? Thanks!

Safemode........... it will load just the basic drivers to get it back on. Then run your scan and quarantine again.

After you get the "del to enter setup" message, start pressing F-8 repeatedly. You should get a menu that comes up with the options for startup. Select safe mode, try running a scan in safe mode (most virus scanners don't seem to work in safe mode for some reasons :( )

Do that. You should then be able to select Safe Mode. You can also change the boot order in there. If you're trying to run your Windows CD, go into the boot order and make sure that the CD drive is first, put in the CD, and then reboot it. It should then boot from the CD.

Also, you may have to set your machine to boot off of the CD. to do this, hit "del" to enter the setup, and go into the BIOS options. There should be a place for boot order... you want to have it boot in the following order - CDROM, floppy, HD

...and when he says 'management', he means "Now get in that corner by the desk and stay there, computer!" :p;)

Nah, I am fairly good at managing files and keeping a very clean computer...

I think Ive had around 2 software problems in 4 or 5 years...

    And this would be one.

Now hardware failure (power supplies, motherboard, etc) is another thing...

Congrats. There was another computer virus/trojan thread. I gave a big answer there.

I have to give bad news at least once a day on broken computers where data is unrecoverable, mainly due to hardware issues (HDD mainly)

Good you didn't have to go through that.

Remember everyone...BACK UP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES!

Yes, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP! Nothing sucks more than a HD dying and all your data gets lost in the wind.

Speaking of backups, i'm in charge of doing the backups for the office i'm in. They just got me a sweet Dell Powervault that does a max of 1/2 terrabyte per hour for a total of 9 1/2 TB's. For those geeks that want to know, it's a Powervault 132T LTO3 with 2 drives (24 400/800gb tapes total).

    Price...$18k! Yummy! :D

I love new toys for the new year.

Tapes? Igh... offsite storage network, man... do it up right :). Here at the school we have onsite backups of our storage server (it backs up to another server), and in the event of a fire or something in the office, the backup also sends its data to a server hosted at 1and1, so we should *always* have at least a week of backups.

By the way... has anyone noticed a large failure rate in the Maxtor slimline HDs? They're regular 3.5" HDDs, but aren't quite as tall as normal drives. I must've replaced 12 of them in the past year... Seems every machine I get in with one in it is deeeeead.

Unfortunately, something called BUDGET gets in the way.

HOWEVER, at corporate, they are getting a SAN in place. SAN = Storage Area Network. I believe (don't know full specs cause i'm not involved) it has roughly 50TB of space, dual fiber channel connections, blah blah blah and a 50 tape backup system that backs up the SAN. So, the SAN creates a mirror of the network and the tapes back that up. The tapes get sent offsite for storage. From what i hear, in the neighborhood of $300k!

A week of backups...not enough. I'll configure things initially to be able to restore from 5-6 weeks back. Depending on what they finally agree on with the higher ups and legal dept that will definitely change. Data and email retention policies are a pain!

When the Suits and Legal goons get involved, **** gets screwed up.

Unreal, now Gigabytes are looking small. We're into Terabytes now. Next up...Petabytes.
