I was in the A.F. for 8 yrs. Best move I ever made. It is the armed service most like a 9-5 job IMO. very little extra duties and details as in the other services. Also typically the best facilities and chow, etc. Maybe a little slower in promotions though. probably least likely to be sent to a dangerous war zone.2 channel - Willsenton R8 tube integrated, Holo Audio Spring 3 KTE DAC, audio optimized NUC7i5, Windows 10 Pro/JRiver MC29/Fidelizer Plus 8.7 w/LPS and external SSD drive, PS Audio PerfectWave P3 regenerator, KEF R3 speakers, Rythmik F12SE subwoofer, Audioquest Diamond USB cable, Gabriel Gold IC's, Morrow Audio SP5 speaker cables. I did the AF thing for 21 years and retired 5.5 years ago. As Charles Dickens once said, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."
I'll agree with dragon about the 9-5 job thing, it's almost corporate but very rank heavy -- a lot of Chiefs and not enough Indians. Expect a lot of good training for your job, and be prepared for responsibility. I was a twenty-something kid in charge of keeping F-16s up to scratch. After I switched into a new job, I was tapped to write an analysis paper for CINCSTRATCOM on the AN-124 crash in Irkutsk. I was published in the Department of Defense 28 April 1998 edition of the Military Intelligence Digest. I also got an Article 15 for having a girl in my room during unauthorized hours in the early 80s.
I provided the coordinates for Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe for the F-16 flyover in Super Bowl ****. I got to live in England, Germany, Turkey, and Korea -- vacationed in Switzerland, East German Berlin, Italy, Austria, Spain, Ireland, and the Netherlands. I sometimes worked 12-16 hours days, wearing chemical gear in searing heat and freezing cold. I had to deal with egotistical maniacs and power-hungry grubbers, and lost some friends whose lives were snuffed out in their prime.
I made life-long friends and enjoyed some of the best festivals the world has to offer. I got to see people in the world who enjoy what they have and have no desires to always want more things.
Id do it all over again.
(Stay away from the Security Forces thats one tough career field with lots of TDYs to not-so-happy places) -
