Polyfill?

I read in another thread that all Polk speakers have polyfill inside, so i wanted to make sure mine did.

I took the grill off the monitor 70s and stuffed my arm inside the port to feel around. the only things my hand touched were the MDF, binding posts, and internal wiring. No MDF to be found. I looked in the back of the CS2 and saw that there actaully was Polyfill in there.

Whats the deal?

I don't own the Monitor 70, but I played one on TV.

First, it is a tall speaker. The fill could be up high in the cabinet positioned behind the drivers and you couldn't see or feel it from the port.

Second, my first point makes sense because the fill would also be kept away from the port in order to not restrict air flow.

Having fill in the cabinet doesn't mean the box is FILLED with fill, especially not for bass reflex designs.

I'm happy you didn't get your arm stuck in your port. Although, if that happens, please take pics.

LOL. I'm a pretty big guy (6'1 about 190 lbs) so im surprised my arm actually fit in there. If it ever gets stuck though, i'll be sure to lug the speaker around until i find a camera to take pics of it

I forget more than I remember, but fill is more often used in smaller enclosures like the CS2 to increase the effective volume of the enclosure. You would think that it would take up space and reduce volume (needed to produce lower freq), but the opposite is true. I can't say as to whether the 70 would need it, or has it for that matter. Fill has other damping function, but .......damn can't remember that either. It's a start.
