Subwoofer help

Hello everyone. I am new to these boards and am an audio novice. If anyone could please provide some guidance it would be very much appreciated.

I have a Denon AVR-1905 receiver. Currently I only have front speakers. Plan on adding surrounds and center later. The front speakers are Polk Rti4. They sound great, but I wanted more bass, so I recently added the PSW10 subwoofer.

When I did the test tone on the receiver, the tone from the subwoofer was alot softer than the one from the front speakers. Should I increase the output to the sub, reduce it on the fronts, or both. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Either or.

As long as they sound the same to you, then that is the correct way. There is no real rhyme or reason on whether you should turn down the mains or turn up the sub. As long as they sound good at the volume you will most likely listen to them, then it is right.

You can set it up a couple ways.

1- buy a ratshack SPL and a set up disk and calibrate the system.
2- play a bass heavy song and adjust the bass till it sounds good, not BOOM-BOOM honda civic but till it fills the room.

Please answer a couple ?s for me.

How are you set up? are your fronts set to large?small? how is your sub hooked up? what is the xover set on your sub?

Right now, I have the fronts set to large, but am thinking of changing them to small. I'm just going to try to experiment some to get the best sound. I have the crossover frequency set at 120.

That brings up something else. Both the receiver and the sub have a crossover filter (the PSW10 does not have bypass input). I turned the sub cross over all the way up to the maximum of 160 and set the receiver crossover at 120. Does that sound OK. Thanks

OK your sub it set right. Now change the settings in your receiver to small. That in it's self should make a big difference. I would also set if you can your receiver to 80hz. It'll bring our the mids and highs from the 4 and let your sub take the lows.

Thank you so much for the input. I'll make the changes tonight when I get home and see how it sounds.

I've had the Rti4's for a maybe 6 months now. Like I said, I'm pretty much new at this, so I don't really have much to compare them to, but I think they sound great. The sound is really clear. Even bass sounded pretty good on them. I just wanted to add some more fullness especially for music and watching TV.

You'll enjoy them more and more the more you listen to them and even more onec you set them up the right way.
