(EDIT) I have my answer. Thanks Jesse.
Until the industry decides to resuscitate this dying format- i've decided go back to the basics to 2ch. SACD playback. I'm tired of the 5.1 thing and all those extra cables that quite frankly can be put to better use so I have a question regarding hookup...
5.1 inputs are required for multi-channel SACD quality, this I know- but what about simple 2ch. SACD?
Do I still have to use the Left/Right/Subwoofer jacks of the 5.1 inputs or can I simply use the L/R CD inputs in the back of the receiver? One of the major issues i had with SACD sound is that the 5.1 input jacks did not have cohesive bass.
Thus far i've tried both methods and in both cases the 2ch. SACD layer sounds no better than the 2ch. redbook layer. I'm confused.

I never had any problems with 2 channel playback of SACDs. My systems, both speaker-based and headphone-based (kind of obvious), are 2 channel stereo only. It depends on the SACD title you get, but there are some that sounds awesomely good. Make sure your SACD player is set up for 2 channel stereo only and not multi-channel surround.
Did you get the Duran Duran SACD?
