I am experimenting with truck bed liner with a gloss clear coat (4 coats over it)...

So far it looks reallly******************** good... I will do about 3 or 4 more coats of clear coat on my test piece and post a pic...

    Let me put about 2 or more coats on it...

    Just to give you an idea what it looks like through words...

    It went from a light texture, dull toned, and greyish...

    With the clear coat it goes to light texture, shiney, and a jet black... (VERY PURDY)...

    Try the hammered finish in black, sounds like the same effect. I really like what my subwoofers look like.

    It was 4something a spray can, as always, use a primer, then one heavyish coat, or two reagular coats. It is cool, when you spray it on, the clear coat comes to the surface, leaving the black behind. this "coming to the surface is a reaction of sorts, and is not 100% even, so it has pits and dips and whatever, giving it a textured finish that is very nice.

    I tried clear coat on top of regular paint for my subwoofer and it didn't work too well for me. After it dried there was a powdery residue that remained and it dulled the paint. That's when I settled for good ol' truck bed liner. May try the hammered finish next time.

    Paint and truck bed liner are quite different......

    Polyurthene (sp) Gloss Clear Coat...

    Stuff from... Minwax or w/e... works pretty good

    I took a pic with just one cost of clear coat - Ive since added a coat... probally wont add anymore so I can spare materials...

    This is with one coat of truck bed liner and one coat of clear...

    Looks good! I've done that before, but I don't have any pics handy. For most of my stuff I like the non-glossy finish because I usually need for it to hide some imperfections in the surface underneath. Of course, if you get the texture right it would still hide a lot. One thing for sure is that it helps with removing dust from the coated panels. The bed liner can be rather rough and hard to dust without a topcoat.

    That pic I took dosnt really capture the amount of...shine the surface has gained from the clear coat... it really is shiney... lol - very shiney actually...

    I was looking for a very glossy like finish all around so i am glad the truck bed liner looks good when clear coated...

    Just added the first coat of semi-gloss poly to my sub which is painted with truck bed liner. Second coat will be applied in 3-4 hours.

    Sid, my sub better look real good when I'm done or I'm gonna kill ya! :eek:


    Question: Once the poly sets in, will I be able to set drinks on top of my sub without leaving a circular discoloration? Or is the poly merely a decorative coat?

    Alright....

    Maybe I should explain how I apply poly clear coat... ;)

    I put a coat on there, and I do NOT wipe it off.

    I blow on the bubbles (which gets rid of them)
    so... I get a rather shiney and I mean... SHINEY finish...

    I find this looks alot better than applying then wiping and to me - it is much easier... It also is alot more shiney... and I like that too!

    I wouldnt set drinks on it...

    use a spray on laquer over the truck bed liner (hell they make spray on bed liner too - that'll cover quite a bit more evenly i'd think too) - anyway - laquer is the best looking finish you're ever going to get.

    load up 3 or 4 coats of laquer clear on there and then wet sand the livin hell out of it with 2000 grit sandpaper... same way you'd do a hood or a fender on a car... it works on furniture the same way - buff it and (dun dun dun!!) hit it with some car polish and wax (yup) ... last ya 100 years or more and look like glass the whole time.
