I'm sick of dial up. I have a ton of multiplayer games with no way to play them. I'm tired of trying to download something only to lose the connection when the download nears completion. I can go on and on. Anyone have a cable modem I can use? I don't have a ton of money to spend on one new, and I don't want to have to rent one. If anyone can help me out, it'd be much appreciated.

Have you checked with your cable provider? Usually they sell them rather cheaply when you sign up for the service. Usually you have the option to rent, pay over time, or purchase outright. I see you are in IL same as me, is Insight your provider?

Charter is the only provider in my area. I'd like to get DSL but it's not available in my area. Charter has a deal right for $20 a month for the first 6 months. I'm not sure if that includes a modem or not, though. I'm looking on the site right now but can't find anything...

I recommend the Toshiba PCX-5000; Cable modem, firewall, router, all in one. Wireless support too.

I have the Toshiba PCX-2200 and I think they only cost $79 new in a store. There's a few of them on Ebay that you can pick up used if you want to go that route. It's been a while since I've bought a modem, but you might want to put a call into your provider before you make a purchase to find out if the modem you're looking at is compatible with their system. My modem was find in Phoenix, but they had to make some config changes on their end to make it work here in Chicago.

Just don't go and buy the first thing you see before you know it's going to be compliant with your provider.

Thanks guys. I'm just going to go with a modem that Charter supplies. Less hassel that way, I think.

    I'd still price shop skeezer......

They might give you the right modem, but I bet you can get it for quite a bit cheaper somewhere other than them.....

Best Buy and/or Circuit City typically have some kind of deal where you pay for the modem (like $70 or so) and then there's a rebate for the full amount. On top of that if you sign up for the service through the store, they'll have special deals as well. Maybe 20 or so a month for 6 months.

I think I found a good modem on Craiglist. A Motorola Surfboard 4100 for $10. I've searched around and found some good reviews for it. It should be fine until I can get something better. The Toshiba does look nice.
