Roadhazard warranties

I've gotta get a few new tires, and was thinking about getting the Roadhazard Warranties on the tires. I haven't really considered getting them before, but the roads here in Chicago are in a constant state of ****, so I'm strongly considering it. The tires are $79/ea and the RH is $13.50/tire.

I know typically the knee-jerk response we have for extended type warraties is to pass, but I figure that if a new tire is needed, $14 is better than $80........right?

    Those are the only extended protection plans I buy. At nearly $200 per tire I swear by 'em.

    Yeah, if I were paying only $80 a tire, I'd actually probably pass - but on the Alenzas I just put on the 4Runner at $200 each, you bet your **** I got the warranty...

    My Sumitomo HTR Sport tires I put on my truck were $110/tire, mounted balanced and all that... I went ahead and splurged the extra $11/tire and got the road hazard. It only takes once to make it worth it...

    Go to costco roadhazard is included with the price of buying the tires. I only buy my tires from costco. They have already replaced two tires on the wife's van.

    I am a firm believer in not buying extended warranties (I sold them for five years at Circuit City) and was raised in a household with parents that never bought them, and my father is the best mechanic I've ever met. With that, he ALWAYS purchased the road hazard warranty on our tires, and it has paid off in the end.

    Or go to Sam's Club, same deal as Costco. Since moving to the Chicago area almost 5 years ago, I have had at least 4 flat tires, and I have ruined two tires. That's more in the last 5 years than in all the rest of my driving experience! Get the road-hazard warranty! Also, check the terms, some of them pro-rate the tire after as little as 20% wear. I believe Sam's is full replacement up to 50% wear.

    I use www.tirerack.com and the additional road hazard price is negligible in comparison to actual tire cost.
    CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    Tire Rack is about 2 hours away from me here in Chicago......

    Doro, do you have a shop that allows you to buy your tires and they only charge to mount and balance?

    If you have a problem with any of the tires you buy from them, do you have to wait for them to ship you a replacement?

    Brett - Yea, I just use a local Texaco that I've gotten all my, "I can't do it" work done at for the last few years. I pay $30 for mounting and balancing.

    You mean the Indiana place? Shipping is cheap man, but drive on if you want.

    I haven't had an actual tire issue in 18 years of dealing with Tire Rack, so I have no idea.

    I've only damaged one wheel in my lifetime, not a tire, and that was drunken pothole yeehaw. Tire Rack has been around for a long time and I'm sure their CS is solid. In addition you do have manufacturer warranty against defects and depending on the city, a county or state claim against known road hazards.

    I went onto Costco's site and they have the tire type that I like for my car, but not the size I'm needing. I'll call them in the morning to check if they can get what I want and see how much it'll all run to get the tires done.......

    I was in a Firestone a couple weeks back getting a quote on the Destination LE's for my beloved Dodge.

    A chick came in and said whilst coming back from out of town she ran over something and shredded one of her tires and was now riding on the donut spare. She said she had the road hazard warranty and so he pecked on the computer and told her "thatll be $20"...for a brand new tire!

    Im sold on em. But my tires are $200 a piece (which is why I was looking into the $130 Firestones rather than my usual $180 Michelins) so if I were only paying $80 a tire, the $80 roadhazard wouldnt be worth it for me. For the price of the road hazard you could buy a brand new tire anyway and its doubtfull youll shred 2 tires.

    If they are Michelins they have a $60 off coupon at Costco.They usually have some around the tire shop.

    As Doro suggested Tirerack. They are top notch in both knowledge and service. I have my local mechanic and I always drop ship the tires directly to him. I pay and have them shipped to his shop and then he mount and balances for me. I always get the road hazard because I always seem to have issues with foreign object finding their way into my tires.

    FYI, if you buy rims and tires as a package they will mount and balance them for you, ready to go when you get them.

    I forgot about that package deal. They also heat cycle and sipe the tire if you request for a nominal fee.

    The tires I'm looking for are BF Goodrich Traction T/A H. These aren't low profile at all, but have a good stiff sidewall which made a world of difference in the way my car handled.

    I slept all day and forgot to call Costco when I was awake, so I'l call them in the morning.

    I prefer Dunlop, Yokohama, Pirelli and more recently Continental.

    I've used Tirerack for the last 20 years and wouldn't consider anywhere else. There are several shops that will mount and balance and even get rid of the old tires for a reasonable price. I have never bought a roadhazard warranty. Only 3 tires out of 100 or so would have qualified for replacement so NOT buying roadhazard has been the right choice for me. I've been running Kuhmos lately. Very good tires for the money. Continentals are very good to. The OEM Firestone Firehawks on my car now suck. Marginal dry traction and TERRIBLE wet traction. They'll be gone soon.

    Can you order tires from Tire Rack and then have them delivered to your local shop for installation? I live in an apartment and having 4 big old tires delivered here would not be practical.

    Tires are as personal/subjective as audio :p . The best tire I've run in a long time for overall great multi-season performance (both brett and I live in Illinois) is the Bridgestone G009. Excellent dry capabilities and simply awesome in rain and snow. I used to buy primarily Pirelli, but I've switched to Bridgstone (atleast for all around performace here in the midwest).
