See that was the reason for the thread, I had never had to replace a harmonic balancer on any car I've ever owned, traded for or even heard of someone needing to replace one. Just weird.

    Noel
I never worked on the bottom end of small block Ford, I found it a little strange that the balancer is off weight / heavier on one side / lighter on the other. The Ford small block must be very small and needed to add the counter weights needed at the balancer, different then a Chevy small block counter weight is on the chank shaft the balancer is not off weight like that Ford engine..

Working on some old memory recall 15 / 20 years so if you know something else don't beat me up hard ok.

This could be why you never heard of that going bad, most engine don't need the off weight balancer.

That is true for Chevy displacements up to 350 CI. However, Chevy's 400 CI small block, introduced in '70 IIRC, was externally balanced. There wasn't room in the block for larger crankshaft counterweights needed to offset the bore/stroke combination. The 454 CI big block Chevy was externally balanced as well.

One could eliminate the 'unbalanced' (or counterweighted) harmonic balancer and flywheel in these engines by adding slugs of the heavy metal Mallory in the crank counterweights. That would add considerable cost to a balance job, but would allow the use of non-counterweighted or 'unbalanced' harmonic balancers and flywheels.

Well I will say you really know what you're talking about.

    Yes it's true I never work / build a Chevy 400 or 454 engine have work on or built 327 / 350 / 396 the small V6 2.3l not the semi V8 - V6 engine 4.3l.

The 400 never interested me due to the blocks design of the water jackets the 383 combination of the 400 crank in the 350 block I always like, but never put one together.

Believe it or not, I may have a knack for making engines SING as I was ask once to be the chief mechanic for someone who looking to get into racing.

That's just a little something about me.

Thanks Steve. I had some good teachers.

Over the years I've worked at Hoger Engineering building drag race cars and worked part time in a machine shop for machine time to build my motors.

I've raced Super Stock, C Gas, Brackets, and Super Comp. I've owned/raced Ford's (my fav, a '68 428CJ Fastback Mustang), Chevy Camaros and Chevelles, and even a Dodge Demon.

I crewed on an IHRA Pro Stock I helped build (General Lee Edwards), a Mountain Motor Pro Stock, an IHRA Pro Mod car and an NHRA Alcohol Fueled dragster. I Crew Chiefed for Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick in '96 and '97.

I've had some radical street cars throughout the years too. Fastest trip down the 1/4 was 7.36 @ 196MPH. I retired from racing at the end of '97.

What kind of car were you going to chief on?

I want to hear every single detail about each and every one of those 'radical street cars'. And especially elaborate on that one that did 7.36 @ 196! That's fast!

    Thanks guys,

First off 68 428CJ Fastback SWEET, if I recalled someone had the heads off that engine or the 429 Ford engine you could put a tennis ball into the intake port. I'm not sure which head that was, but when I saw that I know right than why it didn't work to well on the street. A race engine detuned for the street to get enough cars on the street to call it stock, those heads needed something like 6 grand to flow enough air to keep the fuel from falling out. Something that would never fly with today’s emission laws.

As far as the chief on I'm almost too embarrassed to say, but I didn't know **** about that engine or car but he know I could learn it fast. I which point I turned him down he continue to ask for about 6 months.

Tell you what that Ford 302 making over 2000hp was really cool, that really get's my blood flowing see message #40.

A 428 Pontiac engine under a hood of a 1981 Grand Prix was going to be my sleeper, never done just a dream now.

Some told me I was going to need a full gage roll bar to keep the chassis from flexing too much, well that was going to KILL the sleeper effect cold.

Are you sure that's a 302 in that Mustang? I don't care how many turbos you've got on it...I can't imagine a 302 making that kind of power.

Oh, and it's an awesome video, for sure.

And that, my friend, is among my top ten favorite cars. The Grand National with the 3.8 liter, turbocharged V-6. Amazing car...*drool*...

Twin turbos on that one...nice. Though, I'm not real fond of how he has them sticking through the hood. Different, for sure. The chart says 1076.7. That's pretty good!

    Thanks for the vid!
