Anyone have an opinion on or experience with this model?

I found one in an ad for $40. The guy said he got married and between him and his new wife they just have too many players.

I searched reviews and they seem mixed.
Here is the ad:

I'm not sure the guy knows enough to be purposefully trying to pull a fast one. He says "progressive scan", the literature I found seems to say "no". Some reviews say no CD-Rs.. any chance home-recorded CDs have gotten better so this unit wouldn't know it was a copy?

Just looking for some insight. I'd be replacing an Apex 800 that has performed flawlessly for 5 years - but I know it isn't a high quality player. We get a second of dropped audio here and there, blacks that fade from black to gray and back again, trouble reading through fingerprints, etc.

$40 is too much to waste... perhaps better spent somewhere else??

I don't know anything about that unit, but I do know that many older DVD players will NOT play CD-R. Sometimes they'll play CD-RW's, but not many people record music on those.

If it were me, I'd probably try to pick up a newer (or new) player. You can get pretty decent ones in the $50 range. I think I paid $49 for my Toshiba 3950 from Amazon last year, and it does progressive scan, has nice video quality, and audio CD playback sounded good, even before I modified it.

EDIT again: I just looked at the ad and saw that it's a changer. In that case you might not be able to pick up a new one for as cheap as I mentioned.
