I received a nice 2000 Tacoma Prerunner Xcab for Christmas :D it has the stock system in it,has door and rear speakers,I want to replace the head unit with a nice 4 channel unti, and upgrade the speakers.Im not sure what my budget will be,but I dont want to spend a bunch,I dont want to add an amp,no room.I have always used Alpine in all my autos,a friend of mine just replaced an Alpine with a Pioneer, and it does sound better.Whats the best bang for the buck...head unti and speakers?

Far as headunit i would go with a alpine, pioneer or a kenwood. Also to get a decent headunit you need to put at least 200 bucks in one. I would not go any lower than that tho. Far as speakers since your going to be running them off the headunit. I would go with the polk db's. They will sound okay off a deck but nothing like if they were amped.

Eclipse also has solid head units. I know you are not intersted now, but later on if you ever wanted to add an amp, Eclipse has a very nice preamp section.

As long as its a major name brand you will do fine. Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, Eclipse and Clarion all make very good head units. Im partial to Alpine myself but would have no problem owning any of the other brands.

Just shop around and find the one with the looks and features that you want and fits within your budget.

Cam is right about the speakers as well. Momo's really need an amp to come alive but DB's can get by with head unit power just fine.

I had a set of Polk db's at one time,I really didnt like them,I replaced them with some Infinity Kappas, they sounded great!

Ick. I dont like Infinitys at all. Way too bright and tinny sounding.

Still, off a head unit with such low power they might work ok. Just dont hook up an amp to em. Theyll make your ears bleed and all the dogs in the neighborhood will be following you around.

Well if you were not impressed with the db's you need to step up to the momo's. The momo's will put those infinity kappas to shame. If you want your **** to sound better than the polk db's then there's going to be no way around not amping them. For the sound quality your looking for your not going to get it from a headunit.

Actually these were ran off a nice kicker amp, they were way better than the polk,of coarse the kappa series are serious in sound as well as price, way better than the db's I thought
