Component hookups?

My DVD is hooked straight into my HD TV with Component #1
My HD DVR cable box is hooked into my TV with component #2.
(still trying to get the DVI/HDMI-HDCP issue straightened out with the cable co.)
I have two digital coaxs (one to each) for my audio.

My question is: What are all of the components (Video 1,2,3) and (Video Out)on the back of my receiver used for? Is there another way or a better way of hooking everything up?

Your AVR is a switch box if you made all your connections to the AVR, then componet video out to you televisions comonent video in, you accomplish two things:

    1. you can actually use your AVR to switch between each component without having to switch you TV's video from one two or three.
    2. You get to see you on screen display when setting up you AVR speaker config..

I have it hooked exactly like you do, and one reason is as not to have to buy more cables as needed, a quality component cable could run 50-$100. I do have to switch with my TV, but hopefully when I get a Harmony remote I can have macro set-up to make all the switches with the hit of a button. The other reason is that my AVR is a few years old and it takes cable priority, and don't think that having in's with composite, S-video & compnent would work if I went out with component, some AVR like Onkyo didn't have this issue. I think you're hooked up fine..! Save the money you'd of spent on extra cables and buy something like an upgraded sub or a bunch of DVD's. Also I have the same issue with DVI cables. Toshiba CS says absolutely do not use a DVI to HDMI cable. Only use a cable with same ends with an adapter not doing this could void your warrany.. Plus another reason I'm hooked up as you is my older AVR doesn't take HDMI in, but if so I need another cable again to get out.. I'm interested in what other may advise.. Oh yea, I do connect my VCR to the AVR and out with RCA cables to the TV. This allows me to see the on screen set-up of my AVR when in speaker set-up configuration, just a lot of switching this way..

Right I plug all my cables into my receiver than one pair out to my TV. I don't like having to swap inputs on my TV every time I switch source.

Willow, So my AV knows which source I'm wanting to play? The only 2 sources I use are cable and DVD. I'll buy another set of component cables and try this out. I've never seen any on-screen speaker set-up. That would be great as well. Will this just come up when I attempt to set them up? My Onkyo has some set up function on the 603 but I also have the Avaia DVD and a RS analog meter if that wouls do a better job.

    FWIW,

I have my HD box, my dvd via component into my receiver. then I use the monitor out via component. The only thing I have connected via svid is my xbox, my vcr is upconverted from, composit to svid. This is a reason why I want a new receiver to allow all my connections via component.

But my opinion is less is more, the less devices you run the signal through the less chance for signal degradation. And more cables cost more money. I run the signals I can through the AVR like cable and DVD/CD coax inputs but the super video from my DVD goes right to the TV. Why would I buy an extra super video cable? It all depends on your configuration and location of components which is best for you.

    Hey guys,
I tried hooking up components from my DVD and Cable box going into my Onkyo. (Video 1 & 2 in) I then hooked up another set (out) into my TV set. For some reason I got sound with no picture OR picture with no sound. What went wrong?

You may have to assign the video inputs for the device on your receiver. Are you getting the On Screen Display (OSD) with your connection to the TV?

No, I have never seen the on-screen display. (I've never used my AVR before) I've always ran components directly from my DVD & Cable box directly to the 2 TV component in's.

The only reason I can see to run everything through your AVR is because for some reason you only want to run a single component/hdmi cable to your TV.

For example this is my plan since I went and Bought a 42" plasma that will be wall mounted I want to limit the amount of cable that I will have to run through the wall to One HDMI, Cable, And power.

    Hope that helps.

    RaysR6,

That is exactly why I run everything through my AVR. I treat my Plasma like a monitor where the AVR is the hub of the system. Only one video cable and the Plasma's power cord runs from my Plasma. All other connections, component switching, video switching, and audio switching is done through the receiver. All the TV has to do is show pretty pictures from the wall and look good doing it!

Before I start over, if I connect 1 of my 2 TV Color Stream HD's (Does it matter which one I use?) to my AVR component OUT, will I be able to see an on-screen display of my speaker set-up once I hit the initial set up button?

If yes, I can then proceed with plugging my cable box & DVD into the component in's on my amp and then hopefully just identifying them with the Onkyo. This can't be this difficult!

My TX603 manual states that onscreen setup menus are displayed to TVs connected to either of the Monitor Out Jacks (page 41) - which I read as NOT Component Output.

Page 43 has how to assign Component inputs to Devices (much as how you assigned Digital Audio inputs to devices)

    MLZ,
Thanks. I'll give it a try. It says on pg 43 "the main menu appears on screen." I guess you must hook up the first det of components to be able to see anything on the TV screen?

When I get my HDTV, I'm planning on using both the Component for watching and s-video for setup (I already have the cable anyway)

IIRC my onkyo will allow me to view the osd onscreen after I tell it which output to use.
It seems like there is a choice between svid and something else. (can't remember if it is component or what)
This has to be selected in the osd menu while you are looking at the display on the avr.
Once you have selected correctly you can see it on the monitor.

    Sky,
That was it. I've got the on-screen menu working and can put 1 (TV) of my 4 remotes in the drawer. Now I can spend the next week figuring all the menu's items. Thanks for all the help.

    Sweet, I helped someone. :D
Now you have to spend a week or two programming the remote to do everything.
