Using a peq

Just wondering, how do you use a peq with a Rat shack meter? Do you play each freq 10-100 hz or whatever & go back a forth to you sub & adjust it? The only eq Ive ever done is with a eq & mike & pink noise generater. It looks like it would be a pain!! Thanks

You play each sinewave and record the reading on the SPL meter. Then plug those numbers into Excel. You use the correction factors to get the right levels, then plot the SPLs vs Hz in a line graph. Then using that graph, you make changes on the PEQ, then re-graph and repeat until you like what you hear. There are also programs that will show you what filters to use, but those take the fun out of it IMO. ;)

You can get the sinewaves here:http://www.snapbug.ws/sinewaves/

Start reading at page 9 in the PC Ultra user manual. It contains an explaination on how to use the PEQ on the plate amp. It might also be helpful if you mentioned what PEQ you are using as it might be different than the link I provided.

You do not have to plot each tone, just use the tones that are built into this excel workbook and graph your before and after.

That will give you a good idea of what is going on. (plus the correction factors are already built into the spreadsheet.)

It works the same as the BFD. Go ahead and graph your response then use the PEQ in the sub to tame whatever is your largest peak and see if you are satisified with it. Until you get the graph it is hard to tell if you need any PEQ let alone more than one.

The BFD has 12 bands of PEQ and I usually use 4 or 5 on the peaks in my room, but every room and setup is different.
