R30s ok for rear surrounds?
I'm thinking of getting the R30s as my two rear surrounds to replace some ancient tower speakers and I was just wondering how they work when paired with my existing RT800i mains and Cs400i center? I can pick them up for $150CDN for the pair.
Thanks.
Thanks.

is that a good price? Outpost has them on sale for around 70 US. though i don't know about border shipping and tax and what not...
I don't think the R30's are bad at all I'm using them right now for my rears. Ideally you would want to timbre match everything but the rears for Home theater use are just used for surrounds and a little bit harder to tell the difference.
Many use bookshelves and dipole/bipoles. These are easier to place and well if you have floorspace there is nothing wrong with towers as rears (actually better). depending on your room and if you like HT or not I would see if you could fit in some bipole/dipoles.
but...bottom line is r30's are fine just gotta raise them up a tad and remember they are towers so they need room and would not be out of sight like some wall mounts.
Hope this helps,

I am using R30s as surrounds with RTi70s and CSi40 on the front. They were a little brighter than my fronts, so I used my channel equalizers to tweek them, so the sounds merge better. I also have my R30s on 22" inch stands to bring the main drivers above head level (this puts the base ports near ear level). The R30s work, but if you can find used speakers that match your fronts, it may be better. My R30s, when I had R50s in the front, matched real well.Win7 Media Center -> Onkyo TXSR702 -> Polk Rti70

I also use R30s as rears, they are placed as far from the couch/listening area as possible and angled somewhat into the couch area- this has provided me with better dispersion. Their 6 1/2 driver has enough bass to make the surrond channels come to life. They work well with my r50 mains and csm channel.

Thanks for all the feedback. I decided to get the R30s for my rears since they were so cheap during Boxing Day sales. I'm sure these will be better than the 20+ year old tower speakers I currently have.
