Ground Clearance

I have a downward firing subwoofer and it's ground clearance is only about an inch from a carpeted wood floor. Should I be concerned about this from an SQ perspective?

Thanks.

Personally I would want a couple more inches from the floor. For strict SQ purposes I dont like downfiring at all but for output purposes it works very well.

You could always rig up something underneath it and raise it up a couple inches and see how it sounds to ya.

Assuming you are going high excursion (sometimes greater than 1" one way)

I'd want, minimum of 1" of extra clearance...

So if you got a 25 MM One way excursion - you want atleast 2" of space......maybe 3" - 1" may be pushing it...

Anybody know how much clearance the SVS box subs have?

    2" -

Each SVS sub has around 2" of linear excursions, FWIW (so they have 1" extra space)

OK, I gotta get some new casters for my DIY sub. They're currently 2" so I wanna go with 3 inchers. The sub will be too tall if I go any higher (got it hidden nicely on the side of the sofa). I'd love to throw a concrete slab underneath, but the "pretty police" not approve.

I used some 12" slate tiles instead of concrete. Solid and they satisfy the "pretty police" enough.

Hmmm. That'll work. I can match the color of the slab with the sub. The WAF won't have a problem with that at all. They love stuff that matches.

I've been told that for a downfiring sub it's best to have the height at which it is off the floor about 75% the width of the port. So a 4" port = 3" off the ground. That's what I used for my atlas 15 diy sub and it seems to work well.

Wouldnt that be if the port is down-firing too??

Yeah sorry I forgot to mention that part of the forumla... it is common to put the ports on the same side as the driver so I kind of assumed there.

Since I have a rectangular sub, my ports are in the rear so I could make them a bit longer.

I wonder if a 1 inch clearance increase will make a SQ difference. We'll see.

BTW -- anyone know the sizes and prices of those concrete slabs that homeowners use to set their AC condensers on? I need one that's something like 20" x 32"
