Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth - 1959 - 20th Century Fox - Released to DVD March 4, 2003 - Widescreen Anamorphic - 132 minutes.

James Mason, Pat Boone, Arlene Dahl, Diane Baker.

This is simply a fun movie. A Sci-fi special effects blockbuster (for 1959). By todays standards the SE is very antiquated...painted backdrops, lizards as phe-historic monsters, bathtub oceans etc... but I was never bored for a second. Even when Pat Boone breaks into song for no apparent reason it somehow felt like it was supposed to be there. The movie was generally faithful to the book. As hokey as the acting "seemed" to be at times, it fit the movie and was entertaining. The picture quality was stunning for a 46 year old movie. The transfer to DVD is among the best I've seen for color films of this age. Sound is Dolby Digital 2.0 surround but they managed to get some pretty decent bass, decent rear sound and the dialog was very clear. These kind of movies whether made 46 years ago or just last week are my favorites. I would put Star Wars, Raiders and Jurassic Park in this category. Good story, good acting, adventure, a bit of fantasy and just good fun. No gore, no shock value, no deep redeeming social conscienceness, no adgenda. This isn't an earth shattering, groundbreaking, cinematic masterpiece...but I enjoyed it as much as any movie I've seen in a while.

Hehe! I saw it at "the movies", first-run, for a dime. I remember it vividly, but I don't think I've seen it again since. James Mason was perfect as Captain Nemo. Diane Baker was HOT and classy!

    Way cool! Enjoy!

Cheesy special effects, silly premise, poor acting on some parts, but still a great sci-fi to waste a couple of hours with. There are so many of these fun movies.

I loved this movie as a kid and now I really want to show it to my kids.
I was trying to find the book before Christmas as a present.
I am going to look again today for the book and now the movie.
Actually both movies, 20000 under the sea is also good for movie night.

Excellent idea. I have the books too. I like the way these movies don't try to "modernize" the books too much.

Fantastic Voyage, loved it. Great effects for its day. Rachel Welch looked particularly voluptuous in her diving suit.

LOL... Shouldn't that read "Oldest Polk"

"Journey..." is the only movie I can remember the family walking out of the theater on when I was a kid.

I'd rather watch "State Fair"... Ann-Margaret was hot then and for a very long time after that...
    More later,
